Aussie Athlete Morgan Mitchell Adds This 1 Step to Her Training Routine to Avoid Sweat-Related Breakouts

Australian sprinter Morgan Mitchell is achingly cool. One scroll through her Instagram and you can see that she's a passionate athlete, advocate and all-round legend. After hearing her speak about her vegan lifestyle and her love for skincare, we were inspired here at POPSUGAR Australia to know more and get the inside track on all her beauty and wellness secrets.

Below, Morgan shares her tips for avoiding sweat-related breakouts, the best hairstyles to train in and her go-to hype track.

POPSUGAR Australia: Walk us through your morning routine . . .

Morgan Mitchell: I wake up at around 6 a.m. to take my dog, Hugo, for a walk. Then I come home and have a shower, washing my face with the My Clarins RE-MOVE Purifying Cleansing Gel to remove any impurities. PS: And your nighttime routine . . .

Morgan: Once I'm home from my meetings and training commitments I will freshen up and shower. I then cleanse my face with the My Clarins RE-MOVE Micellar Cleansing Milk. I check up on my emails and bills etc and try to add in time to study every now and then too if I'm feeling it. I'm so obsessed with The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Atlanta, so I will do some recovery rolling and stretching, drink green tea and binge-watch the shows. PS: How do you avoid sweat-related breakouts?

Morgan: I always wash my face after training no matter what! Even if I'm at the track and it's just with water in the bathroom, I need to clean it immediately. It's just something I've incorporated into my training routine. PS: Do you wear makeup to workout? If not, what is your pre-workout skincare routine?

Morgan: I never wear makeup to workout, because I really have no reason to. I think I have been so comfortable with a natural face on the track because there would be nothing worse than sweating it off or getting it on my clothes. That for me would be the worst thing that could happen! I hate stains! I do wear makeup when I race though, I'm really into Tarte, Fenty Beauty and Inika products. All of the products I use are vegan and have proven to last the test of time when I'm out on the track. As soon as I step off the track and am back at the meet hotel, I cleanse and put a face mask on immediately just to avoid any breakouts the next day. PS: What are your go-to workout hairstyles?

Morgan: Working out, I'm a simple bun girl. When I race though, it's all about the braids for me. My friend Fidele does my braids (@Pendezahairextensions on Instagram) I wish I could fly her overseas with me because she has nailed every single hairstyle I've asked for. I also love a slick high curly ponytail, but that's only if I can be bothered slicking it back… the gel is just super annoying to wash out!

PS: Do you have any hacks for keeping your hair off your face when working out?

Morgan: Gel and bobby pins! You will always find these two items in my bag.

PS: What are your go-to wellness products?

Morgan: I take vitamin b12 and iron supplements religiously. I was iron deficient before I was even vegan, so it is something I have to keep on top of especially travelling overseas with limited access to medical help if need be. In terms of other supplements, I try to get everything I need from natural wholefoods in my diet. I believe that apple cider vinegar has a lot of health benefits, so I take a shot of that every day, too. I have downloaded Buddhify which has been my saviour when it comes to winding down and meditating, I highly recommend it!

PS: Any tips for soothing aching muscles after a training session?

Morgan: Recovery jog first! I will jog 3km after a session just to cool the body down. I am a big massage and dry needling girl and I get that done weekly which has helped a lot!
I also love the sauna, I find it helps me to relax and wind down after sessions. Although in summer, I head straight to the beach. It has all the benefits!!

PS: What's your self-care splurge?

Morgan: Online shopping, forever and always! FWRD, Ssense and Farfetch are my go-to websites. I also buy myself a piece of jewellery every year (yellow gold only).

Another big splurge is going to Goje in Yarraville almost once a week. It's a vegan froyo place, and definitely one of the best dessert cafes in Melbourne . . . probably Australia.

PS: What's your go-to breakfast when you're flying out the door to a training session?

Morgan: A breakfast smoothie and a few bliss balls from Soulara. In the smoothie, I will add banana, spinach, berries, dates, vegan yoghurt, oats and coconut water. If I don't want it to be too heavy, I will take out the oats.

PS: Are there any particular snacks you like to eat before training to give you extra energy?

Morgan: Green apples! I love them, it's something I have always eaten before training since I was young. If I don't have that, then dates with a little peanut butter. It gives me a huge sugar/energy hit.

PS: And if you're cooking to impress?

Morgan: It's funny, I hate cooking but if I really had to do it, I have been told I'm actually quite good. My favourite is my rice noodle dish. I add rice noodles, a mixed mushroom medley, bok choy, tofu, seaweed and chilli. I'll also add veggie dumplings on the side as a starter.

PS: What's your favourite kind of workout or training session?

Morgan: Upper body in the gym! I want to get to a 90kg bench press! I love it because it is a goal just to have for fun. I also love speed sessions, so 60m, 80m and 120m sprints. It's a nice feeling when you're fast!

PS: Do you have a 'hype' track?

Morgan: Yes, definitely. A few favourites are Poison by Alice Cooper, Stop Snitchin' by YG, and Dior by Pop Smoke. Sometimes I'll put on my Sound Cloud playlist and that's all just deep house, electronic etc. Anything loud, annoying and upbeat ha!

PS: And lastly, what tricks do you use to ensure you get a good night's sleep?

Morgan: Meditation, breathing techniques — breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds and breathe out for 4 seconds. This puts me to sleep in about 2 minutes! I also love lavender mist, it's so calming.
