POPSUGAR Australia: tbh skincare is relatively new to the beauty world, if you had to describe tbh to someone for the first time, how would you describe it?
Rachael Tyers: Tbh is a fun, approachable and medically backed brand made specifically for the acne-prone consumer! We have partnered with a leading medical research and development company to bring to the market this patented treatment for acne. Tbh leaves the science to the experts and matches the medically backed products to the end customer experience. We are the voice that the acne-prone customer can relate to, find solace in and laugh with. We are super passionate about raising awareness around not only the physical impacts of acne but the mental ones too.
PS: What inspired you to create a skincare brand at such a young age?
Rachael Tyers: I had my own seven yearlong battle with acne prior to crossing paths with what is now the acne hack cream. I was working in medical devices when I was introduced to the cream in white-label form, and immediately I wanted to try it on my own skin. After reading up on the science I was super hopeful for my results, and I was not disappointed! Following my own use of the product, I discovered there was an opportunity to brand this product and bring it to market. As someone with a background in digital marketing, and a super personal experience with acne, it couldn't have been a better fit. As a result, I created tbh (the brand voice, look and feel, the complementary products, the website, packaging, social media community etc.) and I haven't looked back ever since.
PS: Can you walk us through each of the tbh skincare products, what they do and how/when to use them?
Acne hack cream:
tbh acne hack cream ($55) is a powerful formula is designed to be applied once daily, at night, so that it doesn't interfere with your daily makeup routine and fights off acne-causing bacteria within the deep layers of your skin while you sleep.
How the acne hack cream works:
The acne hack cream is formulated with XBIO™ technology, which facilitates the breakdown of biofilm in the skin. This means it can successfully target acne-causing bacteria.
The mechanism of action of the XBIO™ technology:
- Citric acid breaks the metallic bonds holding the biofilm structure together, while the sodium citrate dihydrate prevents the biofilm from reforming
- The patented XBIO™ technology helps the ingredients to break through biofilm (breaking down the E.P.S and exposing the bacteria).
- The high osmolarity environment, aided by the benzalkonium chloride induces the breakdown of the cell, which destroys the bacteria
Why XBIO™ technology?
Breakdown of Biofilm: Biofilms make bacteria stronger and more resistant to attack. XBIO™ technology is able to break through biofilm's protective layer known as EPS.
Better Access to the Pore: While approximately 10 percent of bacteria are free-floating, the remaining 90 percent naturally form colonies called biofilms.
Long-lasting Results: XBIO™ technology fights against the recurrence of biofilm by up to 100x. The sodium dihydrate in the product prevents the biofilm from reoccurring.
Acne Hack Cleanser:
acne hack cleanser ($30) that is specifically formulated with a combination of both cleansing and conditioning agents, to not only clean your skin but leave it feeling silky smooth too. This should be used twice daily (morning and night).
The Cleansing Brush:
acne hack facial cleansing brush ($80), which has seven-speed modes and 3677 touch points to unclog pores, remove makeup residue, and promote blood circulation in the skin. It pairs perfectly with the gel-based cleanser for a deep yet gentle clean. This device should be used with every single cleanse and is completely waterproof so you can take it into the shower too!
PS: Are tbh products only for people with severe acne?
Rachael Tyers: No! People with mild breakouts can also use the cream, however the way in which they would apply it might change slightly. Those with severe/frequent breakouts should apply the cream to the entire surface of their face as a nightly treatment. Those with milder breakouts, or who only have the one-off spots should use the cream purely as a spot treatment. So when they see a new pimple show up, they just have to pop the cream on that specific area and it should really speed up the time it takes for the spot to heal/disappear.
PS: We noticed the word 'biofilm' on tbh's website a lot, can you explain what biofilm is and why we should be aware of it when it comes to acne?
Rachael Tyers: Yes, we are 'the biofilm hack' and the topic of biofilm is at the core of what makes tbh special and different! Biofilms on your skin form when C.acnes (the acne-causing bacteria) adhere to the surface of your skin and begin to reproduce. As the bacteria grows it forms a biofilm (or a colony of bacteria), a slimy glue-like substance, also known as the EPS, which adheres to the skin and is resistant to traditional topical treatments. As 90 percent of your skin's bacteria is living (and thriving) in biofilm colonies in your skin, it is imperative to be able to access the bacteria within these colonies if we are wanting to treat acne-causing bacteria.
Unlike other agents that claim to destroy biofilms, there is no known resistance to the XBIO™ technology; variants are effective against any bacteria and reduce the rate of biofilm recurrence over 100 times.
PS: One scroll through the brands Instagram account and you can see all the amazing before and afters from tbh users, what is it that makes these formulas so effective?
Rachael Tyers: Treatments against biofilm are at the cutting edge of biomedical science, and this is what makes these formulas so effective.
Dr Matthew Myntti, founder and Chief Technology Officer of Next Science that developed the patented formulation explains "The majority of the commercially available products only deal with the symptoms of acne outbreaks and don't deal with the underlying issue of biofilm. Our technology physically breaks down the protective biofilm layer to expose the acne bacteria. Once the bacteria are exposed and enveloped in our solution it makes them more vulnerable to attack".
"Instead of reliance on one key ingredient, the Next Science formulation relies on a very specific combination of a number of ingredients to create a highly buffered, high osmolarity environment that makes it unsustainable for the acne bacteria to live or to grow. The formulation has been tested in clinical trials and is completely safe to use on the skin".
PS: You guys also offer a cute cleaning brush to pair with your skincare, why is that? Does it increase the effectiveness of the product?
Rachael Tyers: Cleansing is so important to prevent new bacteria build up and congestion in the skin. We paired the cleansing brush and cleanser with the cream because doing one without the other just wouldn't make sense. Also, we wanted to ensure we could provide a routine for our customers that worked. We know that the cleanser (alongside the cleansing brush) in the range compliments the cream really well. They are gentle and are designed to work alongside the cream, and don't strip or dry out the skin when used with the cream in a daily routine.
PS: There's a lot of influencers promoting tbh, how do those partnerships come about?
Rachael Tyers: Yes, we have been really fortunate to get to work with some amazing people. It is a bit different every time, sometimes we reach out to people, other times influencers may seek us out themselves. At tbh we have a mandatory trial period that influencers must participate in prior to working with us. Unless they absolutely love the products and have used them to benefit their own skin, then we won't pursue a partnership with them. There have been a few influencers that we have not ended up partnering with after the trial because their skin wasn't 100 percent suited to the products (either they don't have appropriate breakouts to really see the benefits of the products, or they have a stronger focus in other areas such as anti-ageing, hydration, pigmentation etc.). In saying this, we believe this approach is the reason we have been able to achieve so many amazing results and have long term partnerships with the influencers that we work with.
PS: Abbie Chatfield's results are so impressive! Can you tell us about her skin journey and the products that made a difference for her?
Rachael Tyers: Yes, Abbie is definitely a massive success story for us, and as a small Aussie startup, our partnership with Abbie was critical to our initial success. It took a while for Abbie to actually start trialling the products *laughs* . . . I think she had them for at least a month before I really followed her up and told her why she needed to try the tbh products (trying to sell her on the science behind them). Once she started using them, she saw results within the first two weeks and then I think she actually bought what we were telling her. The acne hack cream has definitely been the product that has helped Abbie the most, alongside the daily cleanser.
PS: What's next for tbh skincare?
Rachael Tyers: I think we are still so new, only six months into selling, so right now we want to just continue to find those customers who need our products the most. Alongside this, we have a few exciting products in the pipeline, all of which will be tailored to that breakout-prone customer. At the end of the day, this is always going to our focus, however in saying that the products in the pipeline will be a great option for those who aren't necessarily breakout-prone as well!
