Why “Expensive Blonde” Hair Is Trending For 2023

Hot off the heels of liquid hair came the “expensive brunettehair-colour trend. If you’re a blond, you may have briefly felt left out, but not any longer: “expensive blonde” is here to help you get in on the action. Similar to the expensive brunette shade, this color is all about adding dimension and shine to your hair, making it look the healthiest possible.

Whether you already have blond hair or are thinking of going lighter, you’re probably aware that there are many different shades to choose from, with platinum and dirty blonde being two of the most popular choices. This hair-colour trend is a stunning, sun-kissed hue with lots of soft contrast mixed in.

Ahead, we tapped a couple of hairstylists to share everything you need to know about the look.

What Is Expensive-Blonde Hair?

“Unlike the usual icy blonds, expensive blonde is leaning toward a warmer and deeper tone,” Sharon Dorram, master colorist at Sharon Dorram Color at Sally Hershberger, tells POPSUGAR. “This trend is all about taking the everyday blond we’ve seen and kicking it up a notch with strategically placed highlights and lowlights.”

To get the expensive-blonde look, you’re going to want to book an appointment at the salon. “You won’t be able to achieve it from allover colour box dye at home,” says Hitomi Ikeda, the master colorist at Rob Peetoom Salon Williamsburg. Thanks to its multidimensional tones, this shade looks great on all skin tones. “We can find the perfect tone, but it will be personalized and different for everyone,” she says. The custom shade you get when you see a professional is what gives your hair a “luxury finish.”

Arrive at the hair salon with reference photos in hand and “always discuss with your colorist how light you want to go,” says Ikeda. Also keep in mind the maintenance that going lighter entails. “Instead of asking for an allover colour or balayage, start with a warmer base shade like honey blonde or golden blonde,” says Dorram. Then, for added dimension, she says to add baby-blond highlights to frame the face. This will give the hair contrast without looking streaky or over done. “Unlike a typical balayage, expensive blond doesn’t have high contrast, but rather a much softer, more luxurious blend of shades,” Dorram says.
