I Tried FOREO's New UFO 2 and My Only Complaint is That 90 Seconds Isn't Long Enough
I'm at a point in isolation where the only way I can stay sane is to find the positives. Working from home means I can now go for early morning socially-distanced 10km walks with my friend, swing past the beach on the way home for a drop-and-dip (none of that standing around business) come home for breaky and do a facial all before I start work at 8 a.m.
Yep, iso means I can now include a facial in my morning routine, and it's all thanks to FOREO's new UFO 2. This little baby takes what would normally be a 20 minute-minimum process and turns it into a 90 second activity that I wish went for the full 20.
So How Does it Work?
To get the most our of the UFO 2, I would recommend you download the FOREO app and sync it with your device. Once synced you can register which treatment mask you've chosen so that the device knows which led light colour therapies to use for that particular facial (each led light colour is designed to target different skin concerns, more on that later). This ensures your skin receives a targeted treatment designed for that specific skin concern. For example, when I use the Manuka Honey Rejuvenating Mask to wake up my sleepy skin, the UFO uses both red and orange light therapy to awaken the skin and diminish signs of ageing.
Once you've placed your mask on the UFO and secured it in place, press start in the app and the device will activate. You then begin to massage your face, moving the device in small circular motions around your face, evenly distributing the product. You'll feel a light pulsating feeling, this is the T-Sonic pulsations, the UFO pulses around 10,000 per minute helping to provide a soothing facial massage and facilitates the absorption of active ingredients within the mask, increasing the effectiveness of the formula. They also help to diffuse facial muscle tension reducing the appearance of fine lines and reducing puffiness. Read: exactly what I need in the morning.
As you move the device around your face you'll also notice that it starts to heat up as the thermo-therapy technology kicks in helping to instantly soften the skin and allowing it to absorb the masks ingredients even deeper than before. Towards the end of the 90 seconds, you'll also notice the device starts to cool, this is the cryo-therapy technology that instantly cools skin leaving it feelings firmer and more lifted, while minimising the appearance of pores and de-puffing the face.
Once the 90 seconds is up the device will stop and you can power it down, remove the mask and rinse it in warm water. The device is also gentle enough that you can use it daily or twice a day (mornings and evenings) if you wish. Note: I'd recommend using it post-cleanse for best results.
Let's Talk Led Light for a Second (or 90)
LED Light Therapy essentially works to convert therapeutic wavelengths of light into energy-carrying molecules that allow cells to function at their best. The use of LED Light Therapy works to help speed up skin healing, increase collagen production and targeting multiple skin concerns like ageing, uneven skin tones and dull, dehydrated skin. Different colours of light or wavelengths as they're referred to, are designed to treat different skin concerns. Red LED lights are traditionally the most popular when it comes to reducing fine lines and wrinkles, boosting collagen production, and minimising inflammation and sun damage. The UFO 2 offers eight different colours to help target whatever your skin concern is and they pair it with the mask for you once you've selected you mask. E.g. The Manuka Honey mask activates the red and orange LED lights aiming to rejuvenate the skin. Because I'm all about that "the more you know" vibe, I've put FOREO's full colour guide below —
- Purple LED reduces the appearance of fine lines and boosts radiance.
- White LED tightens the appearance of skin and reduces puffiness.
- Green LED brightens a dull complexion and evens skin tone.
- Orange LED revitalises and awakens skin for a healthy glow.
- Blue LED reduces the appearance of imperfections.
- Cyan LED calms and relieves stressed skin.
- Yellow LED reduces redness and soothes skin.
- Red LED diminishes signs of ageing for younger-looking skin.
So What Are the Results like?
Personally, I've been obsessed with the new Manuka Honey Mask ($25) from the Farm to Face range. It's got all the healing, hydrating and revitalising properties that are found in Manuka Honey, so it's been working wonders on my iso-skin (yes thats a thing). I've also been squeezing the excess formula out of the mask packet and going in for a second massage (try this and thank me later). I've found after each facial my skin is firmer, super-hydrated and I've got a fresh glow for my morning Zoom meetings. I follow it up with my moisturiser and I feel ready to face another day in my apartment, sans makeup. Would I try other masks in the range? Hell yes. I'm currently eyeing of the Green Tea and Bulgarian Rose Masks. Oh, and if you're a fan of the original UFO device, good news, you can also use the cult-favourite, Make My Day ($16) and Call It a Night ($16) with the UFO 2.
