The Exact Foundation Rihanna Uses According to Her Makeup Artist Pricilla Ono
One quick scroll and you're instantly mesmerised by the looks she creates, it's no wonder that she was not only hand picked by Rihanna herself to be Fenty Beauty's first Global Makeup Artist (more on that later), but she's also the creative genius behind some of Rihanna's most iconic beauty looks.
While in self-iso, POPSUGAR Australia was luckily enough to catch up with Priscilla to talk how much the beauty industry has changed, what it's like to work with Rihanna, and why you'll want to give blush a second chance when you get your hands on Fenty's new Cheeks Out Collection.
POPSUGAR Australia: How did you become the Global Makeup Artist for Fenty?
Priscilla Ono: There were thousands of people competing for the Fenty Beauty Global Artistry position and the pool was narrowed down from thirty makeup artists to three. We were told we'd be doing Rihanna's makeup and I wasn't given any direction ahead of time – they told me what she wanted when I walked into the room and then I had to go with it! It was my first time using Fenty products, since this was before the brand launch. I had to shade match her on the spot and was so nervous! But when she looked at herself in the mirror, she was like 'Wow my skin looks so good, you did such a good job!' and I thought, ok I'm in. She kept complimenting me and I was so happy! It was honestly great preparation – when I work with her now, there's always an element of pressure and the unexpected.
PS: What's it like to work for such a groundbreaking, inclusive beauty brand like Fenty?
Priscilla: It's really satisfying to work for a brand with products that look amazing on ALL of my clients. The range is incredible, Rihanna paid attention to every detail and wanted to make sure every skin tone was covered from very fair to very dark and even the subtle undertone nuances in between. Rihanna is such a creative visionary; I am always excited to see what she comes up with next!
PS: I read that you've been in the industry for around 15 years, how has beauty changed in that time?
Priscilla: The beauty industry is constantly evolving and changing. Definitely the biggest change has been the role of social media — everyone has access to learning and sharing their looks. I love where it's going and am so inspired by the amazing creativity that has resulted from platforms like Instagram, YouTube and now TikTok. There are so many amazing micro trends that have emerged and I'm just really excited to see more of that!
PS: Fenty releases some seriously cool (and much needed) innovative products, what's your favourite product?
Priscilla: It is seriously so difficult to choose as there are so many incredible products that are multi-functional. But I would have to say the Match Stix Skinsticks continue to stick out as a favourite and product I use all the time - I can do a full face using just Match Stix, because they are so versatile. You can use the matte shades as contour, concealer, shadow or liner and the shimmer shades as a blush, eyeshadow, lipstick, whatever you want.
Fenty Beauty also just launched a completely new Match Stix finish — Match Stix Glow in Purrrl. I know this will be a new go-to for me because it gives your skin that fresh, dewy, natural glow that's really low-key and minimalYou can wear it on a bare face or layered over makeup as a finishing touch to add a dewy radiance to any look.
PS: What's your favourite product to use on Rihanna?
Priscilla: Pro Filt'r Foundation is for sure the one product we use always. Rihanna always says that she couldn't see her skin without foundation after first trying it when she was young, and she created Pro Filt'r to give her skin exactly the finish that she loves, where her skin still looks like skin but better! Invisimatte Blotting Powder is also a go-to especially for touch ups, when she's running around or under harsh lighting. The skin can get so oily throughout the day and Invisimatte removes that shininess without caking up, because it's translucent!
PS: What's your favourite look you're ever created for Rihanna?
Priscilla: Oh my gosh, there are so many! I loved Rih's look for the Fenty Beauty Launch Event — the look was so iconic and absolutely stunning in Trophy Wife Killawatt Highlighter. Another favourite was the 1 year Anniversary Event in SiJCP this past September. We used the Diamond Bomb All-Over Diamond Veil and she was bathing in 3-D sparkle. It was just gorgeous! She's like a chameleon, every look I do on her just looks so different. I'm always excited for what's next!
PS: What's your favourite style of look to create?
Priscilla: I love doing natural, dewy makeup right now! I love glowy skin with a beautiful hydrated base, bronzed glow and a touch of blush or highlighter at the top of the cheekbones to lift and add dimension to the face. I can easily achieve this with the Cheeks Out Cream Blush and Bronzer collection. The formula melts in the skin so easily and is sweat and water resistant, so I know it will perform. I'm also obsessed with the feathered brow look! To achieve this look I love using Brow MVP Brow Pencil. The key is to use the paddle brush to really blend the product, pushing the hairs upward so you enhance your natural brow hairs while creating a feathery effect.
PS: Fenty's launching the new Cheeks Out Collection, why should we give blush another chance?
Priscilla: The Cheeks Out collection is definitely a must have. Blush is just a great product for giving a natural, flush that you can wear in a simple no-makeup makeup look or layer with highlighter for more radiance. The Cheeks Out Cream Blush has a unique balm-like texture that feels incredibly lightweight and just melts into skin, so it looks really natural and wakes your skin up. Plus, the formula is sheer and layers beautifully so you can apply as much as you want depending on how saturated you want the colour to look.
PS: Finally, do you have any Fenty Beauty hacks that you can share with us?
Priscilla: The Match Stix are SO versatile, I can complete a whole face with just three Match Stix. They're great for contouring, concealer, highlighting, eyeshadow, bronzing. One surprising hack that most people probably don't think of is you can use it on the lips! I actually used Match Stix in the shade Rum on Rihanna's lips for a launch event we did in Italy. and everyone was asking what new lipstick she was wearing! They're so easy to use and you can use them anywhere. Plus, they magnetise together so they're easy to travel with or throw in your bag for an on-the-go touch up.
