Refreshing Your Look For Abroad

Moving overseas is one of the biggest decisions you can make in this life — whether it's for a month or a year. You get a clean slate, with new people, a fresh job, different surroundings and every chance to be whoever you want to be. You know what else? You can tap into the aesthetic of your dreams without having to worry about all the hoo-ha and opinions from your nearest and dearest.

As far as all the people around you are concerned, this is the look you've been rocking forever. And as far as your ego is concerned? We all know how good rocking a new dress or a new haircut can make you feel! So, we say tap into it and be your best darn self.

Amy Skinner, 32, knows about lapping up this opportunity all too well. After years wanting to perfect her teeth and overall smile, Amy decided to bite the bullet when she moved to Australia from London. Because now is as good a time as any, right?

Keep reading to hear all about her journey.

POPSUGAR AUSTRALIA: Why were you advised not to have braces at a younger age?

Amy Skinner: When I was younger my dentist advised that my teeth weren't 'bad enough' to get braces. By the time I decided I really wanted them, I was too old to be given braces on the NHS, so it would have been very costly (when I was about 17). So, I went through my teenage years and waited until I was 27 before I investigated other routes of having my teeth straightened.

PS: What made you decide to undergo Invisalign treatment?

AS: I had wanted to straighten my teeth for so long and moving from London to Australia had given me a real 'fresh start' feeling. I feared that traditional metal braces would impact me professionally so I was really looking for something as discreet as possible. I'd heard of Invisalign clear aligners and knew that they were already very popular. With the help of the Invisalign Smile Concierge team I found an expert orthodontist to help start my journey — the rest is history!

PS: How long was your Invisalign treatment?

AS: I was in Invisalign treatment for two years in total which worked out to about 40+ aligners. We did some refinements in my treatment to get the smile I had always wanted.

PS: What made you self-conscious about your teeth? In your mind, what didn't you like about them?

AS: Having misaligned teeth never stopped me from doing anything, my personality has always been the same. However, I guess I did feel a bit self-conscious of the crookedness on the bottom, especially. I was frustrated growing up as my brother had naturally straight teeth and I definitely got dealt the bad hand when it came to teeth!

PS: How has your everyday life changed since treatment?

AS: I love my smile now, I am complimented on it a lot which makes me feel great. I 100% believe that my new smile has helped give me the confidence to take my career to the next level. I feel I am taken more seriously and I feel more comfortable wearing bright lipstick which draws attention to my pearly straight teeth, rather than my former wonky ones.

PS: Why do you think it's important to take the time and money to consider yourself and your happiness with your appearance?

AS: My Invisalign treatment is probably the best money I have ever spent on myself. I feel that I have way more confidence now than I did before. When I first went back to the UK after completing my Invisalign treatment, everyone was amazed at how good my teeth looked.

PS: What advice would you give to someone thinking about a new look?

AS: I would tell them to do their research and seek professional advice. If their 'new look' is something as central and permanent as their teeth it is so important to make sure you have the right person in charge. The meetings I had with my orthodontist were not only educational, but reassured me that my investment was worth every dollar!
