Does Natural Deodorant Actually Work? Our Wellness Writer Puts It to the Test
I'll be the first to admit, the idea of swapping out my usual deodorant for a natural one actually made me sweat.
When they first started hitting shelves natural deodorants got a pretty bad rap, and like most people I avoided making the switch. But as we become more conscious of what we're putting on and inside our bodies, natural deodorant formulas have been forced to improve, leading people to make the switch to non-aluminum formulas.
I decided to give Schmidt's Natural Deodorant in Rose + Vanilla a go, to see if I could make the switch permanently. Unlike traditional antiperspirants that contain aluminum (which is what blocks your pits from producing sweat), Schmidt's natural formulas are aluminum-free, meaning that you'll still sweat, but the natural ingredients will mask any odour that may be caused by the bacteria on your skin mixing with your sweat. So how does it stack up against traditional deodorants?
Schmidt's deodorant is a roll on, so 2 to 3 swipes are recommended and you kind of press it into your skin as you go so that it soaks into your underarms. Like any deo, they recommend giving it a few minutes to sink in before getting dressed so that you don't run the risk of transferring it onto your clothes. I did notice that it didn't cling to my clothes or leave those pesky white marks like more traditional deodorant's can.
The Workout Sweat Test
For the big debut, I decided to wear the new deo to a boxing class, a bold move since I usually walk out of this class dripping in sweat. About 15 minutes in this deodorant was working hard. I was getting sweatier and sweatier, but all I could smell was roses!
I did however feel slightly slimier under my arms, which made me a little self-conscious. I spent the remainder of the class nervously wondering if I actually smelt and I just couldn't smell myself?! Once the class finished and I was safely in my car, I did a pit check and to my surprise I still smelt like rose and vanilla — Hallelujah! Honestly, I was pretty impressed.
Once my body cooled down, the slimy feeling went away and I felt mostly dry again. All in all, it had passed the my most concerning sweat test. The slimy feeling will take some getting used to, however I'm happy to persist and see if it gets better as my body adjusts to the change.
The Everyday Sweat test
Next up, I decided to wear the new deo out to a long lunch with friends. We were going to be situated outside on a hot Summer's day making it the perfect test situation, albeit risky.
To be honest, I didn't even notice I was wearing it other than when I could smell the rose and vanilla occasionally. And I didn't get the slimy feeling like I did when I was exercising, probably because I wasn't sweating as much. By the end of the night (I did say it was a long lunch) I still smelt good, and didn't feel like I'd just marinated in my own sweat all afternoon. Win!
The Final Verdict
I've actually kept using the natural deodorant because I'm trying to make some more conscious beauty choices this year, plus, I haven't really had a reason to swap back to my usual deodorant yet. And while it is going to take some getting used to in the gym, mainly the slimy feeling, I'm just going to take that as a sign that it's working as hard as I am.
