We’re Calling It: The Soft Serve Mullet Is Your Next Haircut

The ‘soft serve mullet’ is having a moment. And no, we’re not talking about a type of ice cream but a hairstyle that has skyrocketed in popularity over the last year. While the traditional mullet (with its ‘business in the front, party in the back’ design) started to gain traction in the ’80s, its popularity hasn’t continued to rise in previous years.

But, this slight alteration to the original ‘do is proving to be wildly popular, especially with celebrities. The modern take, which is known as the ‘soft serve mullet’, is a more palatable version of the original that still includes short bangs coupled with longer locks at the back, but with a more measured approach.

“The soft-serve mullet is great for someone who wants to add a little texture and volume to their style with a delicate edge, as this bi-level cut focuses on the contrast between the disconnected silhouette and soft perimeter,” hairstylist Jordan Avery Z, who coined the term, told Allure.

The beauty of this hairstyle is that once it begins to grow out, you’re left with a super cool shag cut — another style that is experiencing a renaissance. When talking to your hairdresser about the soft serve mullet, Avery Z recommends asking for “soft, tailored bits around the ears and face with shortness through the crown”.
