Golden Globe Review: Hits and Misses

Overall, I’d have to say the 67th annual Golden Globes were a bit underwhelming. No water cooler moments to talk about, no drunk celebs (Julia Roberts was maybe a little tipsy) and no big laughs. I REALLY wanted to like Ricky Gervais as host. I already like him, but he just wasn’t that funny. Usually there’s a team writing one-liners up until the last second for the host, but I wasn’t wowed. Let’s take a look at the evening’s hits and misses.

Miss: Aussies with American accents. We’re talking to you Nicole Kidman and Mel Gibson.

Hit: Heartfelt speeches from Mo’Nique and Meryl Streep.

Miss: Hot mess speeches from Drew Barrymore and Chloe Sevigny. Pull yourselves together already. Remember Gwyneth’s messy Oscar speech? It’s not a good look.

Hit: Robert Downey Jr. He gave us the only funny speech of the night.

Miss: Toni Collette talking about being “on the loo” when she was nominated 15 years ago during her acceptance speech. Cringe.

Hit: Sexy babes—Rose Byrne, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Sandra Bullock.

Miss:  Men with facial hair (Jon Hamm, George Clooney).

Hit: Ricky Gervais did land one zinger when he said he liked a drink as much as the next man—unless the next man was Mel Gibson.

Miss: Sam Worthington looking pained while he was presenting. You know he would have rather been anywhere else. But at least he got to take home a presenter gift basket.

Miss: Where was all the star power? Brad and Angelina? Tom and Katie? Alec Baldwin?

Hit: Glee winning for Best Television Series—Comedy or Musical!

Hit: James Cameron saying the his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow should have won the best director prize. Very gracious.

Miss: Ah-nuld Schwarzenegger calling Avatar "Avadar.”

The Golden Globes are supposed to be the fun, boozy party next to the staid Oscars. Hopefully we can expect a little more in the laugh department when Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin host the Academy Awards on March 7. But what did you think—what are your picks for hits and misses?

Yep, it was on Fox8 live Monday morning and then re-broadcast on Monday night. It's so frustrating when it's not on free-to-air TV!! Arrgh! But at least the Oscars will be shown on Channel Nine on March 7. And you didn't miss out - you're heeeeere and we told you about all the good stuff. Hehe!

How did you even see the Golden Globes? It must have shown on Foxtel only. :( I missed out.
