Confession time: when Channel Seven first announced they were going to produce a local version of The Amazing Race, I was one of the sceptics. Sure, I had moments where I wanted to audition, but mostly I thought The Amazing Race was one of those shows that didn’t need to be adapted to suit a particular country — after all, it goes all around the world! (You know what they should make? An international Amazing Race, with competitors from different countries!) That said, while I watched the show semi-regularly in its early days, I haven’t kept up with the US version for a while, but after seeing promos for the Australian production my interest has been renewed and I’ll definitely be checking it out tonight.
For anyone who’s worried about the whole local-version-doesn’t-live-up-to-the-original stigma, early reviews say we should push aside all concerns because this is a faithful adaptation of the format with the bonus of a distinct Aussie flavour. The casting is spot-on — from Grant Bowler as host to the mix of colourful contestants — and we’re treated to gorgeous visuals and imagery that make for great viewing. The series opens tonight with a 90-minute episode so we’ve got plenty of time to get to know the new characters we’ll be welcoming into our homes each week. Will you be watching The Amazing Race Australia?
The Amazing Race Australia starts tonight at 8:30 p.m. on Channel Seven.
