There’s a song in the musical Wicked called “Thank Goodness,” and we’re sure that’s what everyone is singing after news that Bert Newton is expected to make a full recovery after being hospitalised late last week. Bert has been monitored in intensive care at Epworth Hospital in Richmond, Melbourne, after contracting viral pneumonia, reportedly from his two-year-old granddaughter Eva. His wife Patti said, “He’s pretty stable and in high spirits. I think he’s just very disappointed that he is missing the opening of Wicked in Perth, but they just need to cover every avenue so he makes a good recovery.”
Bert has been playing the role of the Wizard of Oz in the musical since November 2008 and had just completed the Adelaide season with the cast. The show’s Australian co-producer, John Frost, said the cast and crew were sending their love and best wishes to Bert.
