The Block Glasshouse comes to a close tonight after 11 weeks of some of the hardest work we've seen. Five teams — brothers Simon and Shannon, and couples Carlene and Michael, Darren and Dee, Chris and Jenna and Max and Karstan — will go head-to-head at 6:30 p.m. (AEST) as their newly-renovated multimillion-dollar apartments in Prahran, Melbourne, go under the hammer.
If you're a long-time The Block fan, you know the drill. If not, prepare yourself for some nail-biting tensity as you sit and wait excruciating minutes to see if all the apartments sell for a profit, and that all the teams' hard work has been worthwhile. (Remember last year when lovely Mark and Duncan only made $25,000 profit, about $200,000 less than everyone else? We're still traumatised.) We'll be following the finale here, live, so stay tuned for all the action as it happens.
Spoiler alert: We'll be announcing the winner here when it happens (Sydney time) so switch off if you're in another state!
6:30 p.m. There's a wedding tonight! We can't wait to see Max and Karstan get hitched (with host Scott Cam officiating!), from all previews she looks incredible and he looks like the cat that got the cream.
6:35 p.m. Cute, it's fun to see a couple wake up together on the day they're getting married. The Block Weddings — a new concept perhaps? While the girls get their hair and makeup done, the guys are off to the barber for a bit of manscaping. Max, the cool, calm and collected bride, says she's suddenly very nervous and we're feeling it too!
6:39 p.m. Scot Cam's nervous for a change and, wow, Maxine looks incredible. We're ten minutes in and we're crying, good. The dress is by Jane Hill, by the way.
6:42 p.m. Scott gets right into proceedings and we're loving every minute of this non-renovating Block action.
6:44 p.m. That was short, but so sweet! We've known Max and Karstan were getting married for a couple of months, so it's lovely to see how it all unfolded. But as we know, time is of the essence on The Block so we're getting straight into the regular final episode shenanigans.
6:53 p.m. It's always fun sticky-beaking in other peoples' places so it's exciting to see inside these beautiful new homes. Michael and Carlene were potentially our favourite couple of the season. They had a bit of flair and kick to their style, but were always super consistent in their delivery. They also shared a light-hearted perspective which was a breath of fresh air at times.
6:57 p.m. Oh, Chris and Jenna, our hearts bleed! These self-described novices started off with a bang (a perfect score in week two) and steadily went downhill from there. In fact, no one has come last more times than then, EVER. In the history of the show. Sheesh. They kept up their positive attitudes week after week, though, and as a result we're all so keen for them to see a great result.
7:03 p.m. Funny that majority of fans seem to be kids. Who woulda thought children would love renovating shows?
7:05 p.m. Recap time for Max and Karstan! Now we go through all their hard work and catch glimpes of their new-found fame. What a trip it must be for all of these teams, they were just normal people a few weeks ago! Side note: we're still confused about the Max and Karstan money situation. Did anything come of the audit the other teams insisted on?
7:09 p.m. Thought: the word "cheating" is thrown around way too freely on this show.
7:11 p.m. We're gonna miss Simon and Shannon on our screens, they're hilarious! Such larrikins. Very talented designer larrikins, who aren't bad on the eye.
7:17 p.m. Darren and Dee's place is incredible, no two ways about it. She ruffled a lot of feathers, but she sure knows how to style. I think from what we've seen, their apartment is the most cohesive and well thought out.
7:21 p.m. They're all nervous and just want the auction to be over. Can you imagine that anxious wait? No thanks. What do you think the odds are of underdogs Chris and Jenna taking the win? It's happened before . . .
7:26 p.m. Eep, reserve prices time! This is arguably the most important part of the whole show, as it's when the teams learn the minimum amount of money they need to sell their apartment for in order to make a profit. I.e., if their apartment's reserve price is $1.5 million and they sell for $1.75 million, they walk away with $250,000 profit. The Block editors love making a mini-movie out of this moment, so settle in your seats. BYO popcorn.
7:34 p.m. Chris compared the moment to his wedding day, which seems quite apt. The reserves:
Michael and Carlene: $1.4 million. After their $20,000 bonus: $1.38 million.
Chris and Jenna: $1.5 million
Max and Karstan: $1.7 million. After their $30,000 bonus: 1.67 million
Simon and Shannon: $1.575 million. After their $10,000 bonus: $1.565 million
Darren and Dee: $1.4 million. After their $30,000 bonus: $1.37 million
7:38 p.m. They can't decide which order to go to auction in so Scotty sorts it out according to who scored the most points over the season. Michael and Carlene scored the most points so they get to choose first, they wisely choose last place. Darren and Dee choose fourth spot, Simon and Shannon nab spot two, Max and Karsten pick third and Chris and Jenna are left to be the first to go to auction, a traditionally unpopular position to be in. Fingers crossed it works out for them!
7:45 p.m. Auction time! They look calm but we know the truth. #petrified.
7:48 p.m. I'm so nervous for Chris and Jenna I can hardly type. Let them make money PLEASE. Was that Frank we saw? Bidding is off and they've already hit reserve . . . and it's stopped.
7:50 p.m. STOP. IT.
7:54 p.m. YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!
7:58 p.m. They're flying now, $130,000 profit!
8:00 p.m. $210,000! $240,000! $260,000! $310,000! This is BRILLIANT.
8:01 p.m. SOLD! Chris and Jenna's apartment sold for $1.81 million meaning they walk away with $310,000 profit.
8:03 p.m. Woah. Shannon and Simon's profit jumped straight to $135,000 without even the tiniest warning!
8:07 p.m. Wow! After what might be the quickest auction of all time, Simon and Shannon sold their property for $1.9 million, meaning they've made $335,000 profit tonight. That means Chris and Jenna are out of the running to win the overall prize of $100,000 on top of their profit, but we reckon they're just fine with the $310,000 in their pockets.
8:13 p.m. Max and Karstan's time, and poor Max looks terrified. It was a slow, rough start. First big was $100,000 less than reserve. Not good. Now they're getting a bit more activity but still only $20,000 up.
8:16 p.m. This is awful. Max and Karstan only made $40,000 profit, nearly $300,000 less than the others. We're heartbroken for them.
8:19 p.m. Darren and Dee's turn! Thier apartment is stunning, I wonder if it'll be reflected in their winnings.
8:21 p.m. What is WITH these buyers? This is so hard to watch. Darren and Dee's apartment sells for $1.38 million, which means they've only made $10,000. $10,000! For three months of blood, sweat and tears, away from their families and friends . . . Wow. We're stunned. Those buyers got a bargain, that's for sure!
8:27 p.m. Uh-oh. They came back from the ads and Darren and Dee are nowhere to be seen. They must be devastated, we feel so sad for them. Now it's Michael and Carlene's turn, she's crying already but Scott had some really lovely words for them and they managed a smile through their nerves.
8:30 p.m. Not even hitting reserve yet . . .
8:36 p.m. Full range of emotions happening right now. No movement on Michael and Carlene's apartment, so the auctioneer has gone backstage to talk to the couple. Looks like they might have to sell for $1.39 million, just $10,000 over reserve. Sad. This is sad.
8:39 p.m. Well, that's it! Michael and Carlene sold for $1.39 million, giving them just $10,000 to take home. That makes Shannon and Simon the winners, with $335,000 in profit! We're so happy for the boys (let's not forget they get $100,000 prize money on top of that!) but we're so, so sad for the others. It's just not fair. It's lovely to see them put on brave faces for the boys, though; above all they've made lifelong friends.
8:41 p.m. Over and out for another year! Shannon and Simon are the winners of The Block Glasshouse! They get to pocket the $435,000 they've made, which is awesome reward for three months of solid work. Chris and Jenna were the only other team to come out well, with $310,000 to their names now. Full list of profits:
Chris and Jenna: $310,000
Shannon and Simon: $335,000 + $100,000 prize money = $435,000
Max and Karstan: $40,000
Darren and Dee: $10,000
Michael and Carlene: $10,000
See you next season!
