While a lot of the attention was on the dancing during last night’s season eleven premiere of Dancing With the Stars, the episode wasn’t controversy-free. After a strong opening performance by Damien Leith, the next one to hit the dance floor was socialite Brynne Edelsten, who danced a cha-cha-cha to Katy Perry’s “Firework.” And when the performance was over, the judges — Todd McKenney, Helen Richey and new recruit Josh Horner — didn’t hold back with their criticism. Josh said that she “looked like a bedazzled sack of potatoes rolling down on the floor,” and there were several comments made by all three judges about her body. Back in the green room, Sonia Kruger said, “I think it’s great that you get on so well with your dad,” a reference to Brynne’s much-older husband, Geoffrey Edelsten. (Sonia later apologised and presented a flower to Brynne.)
For her part, Brynne doesn’t think the judges crossed the line. She called into Sunrise this morning and said, “No I don’t think they were [too nasty] because they are there to criticise you and give you constructive criticism, and it’s only going to make me better, and I would personally rather have it really hard on me the first show, so it’s that much easier for me to show improvement on the second show.” She said that she wasn’t sure how her husband reacted but “I can’t imagine he would’ve handled it too well.” Instead of dwelling on the controversy, Brynne is looking forward to future episodes, especially one where she can show off her talent with a ballroom number.
