Even though we already knew the outcome of Dani Venn’s immunity pin challenge on MasterChef last night, it was still cute to watch the Melbourne publicist cook her way to an elusive gold pin thanks to a tied result against Ormeggio’s Alessandro Pavoni. (In case you missed it, an editing mix-up showed that Dani was already wearing an immunity pin in promos for tonight’s episode.) The amateur and the pro had to recreate cuttlefish chequerboard with calamari soup and tomato dust, a dish from Alessandro’s own menu at Ormeggio. His disadvantage, aside from Dani being given the recipe and a 10-minute head start, was that he hadn’t prepared the dish in a while as it’s usually the apprentice’s job. But as fun as it was to watch Dani, the event we’ve all been waiting for is taking place tonight, when IT worker Mat Beyer is removed from the competition. No one knows how it will be played out, aside from judge Matt Preston turning up to the MasterChef house late at night to deliver the news to the rest of the contestants. The other part of the mystery that confuses me? The timing. We first heard reports of Mat’s booting in mid-June, but according to the show’s promos it would’ve taken place in May, before the remaining cooks headed to New York for the exciting week in the Big Apple. We can assume (or hope) that most questions will be answered tonight, except for the big one — was Mat really using the smartphone to cheat, or was it for personal reasons, as others have suggested?
