MasterChef promised that last night’s elimination would be one of the most emotional of the series, and with three favourites — Hayden Quinn, Kate Bracks and Michael Weldon — competing for a place in the top five, it was never going to be easy to say goodbye to any of them. After 90 minutes of creating dishes that showcased their progress throughout the competition, it was a case of too-salty, almost-inedible daikon radish on an otherwise perfect crusted coral trout dish that meant Hayden was the one leaving the show.
The most touching moment of the episode was when it came down to Hayden and Michael after Kate’s safety was announced. The boys talked about how they had wanted to be standing together in the grand final in their chef whites, not in a situation where one’s success meant the other’s elimination. Michael even gave a sweet speech (you can read it after the jump) about how much his friendship with Hayden had affected his time in the competition. Hayden called Michael a “special dude” and told him that he had to take out the title. As for all you Hayden fans, his MasterChef journey being cut short hasn’t affected his bigger plans: his new website has already launched, and you can try to reach him through Twitter and Facebook!

Michael said: “Mate, for me it’s the friendship that we’ve made. I didn’t come on here to make friends but out of it I’ve got a guy who I know I’ll be friends with for life. I think I’ve become a better person living with you — I’m cleaner, I get up earlier, and I’m definitely less lazy. Just your positive outlook has definitely influenced me. We didn’t make it to one and two but we’re the last boys left and that’s something I’ll cherish.”
