House Rules: Candy and Ryan Leave on a High Note
All of the makeovers we've seen on House Rules so far have been impressive, but Wednesday's episode was a little more special than most. Given the important task of making over a Barnardos Australia holiday house, the three teams remaining had to create a safe haven for foster families, with lots of pops of colour and a nod to retro style. And boy, did they deliver. The teams put their all into creating a home any child would love, and their emotional connection to the task saw them deliver some of their best work yet.
In particular, Candy and Ryan excelled. The couple, who own a house together in Sydney's Emu Plains, have split since the show wrapped filming, but their work didn't reflect any off-screen drama whatsoever. They had to renovate four large areas: the porch stairs, games room, one of the kids' bedrooms, and the kitchen — a heavy load that saw them pushed to their limits and come to verbal blows with WA couple Carole and Russell. But, on-set tension aside, Candy and Ryan had a great week that saw them produce what judge Joe Snell called "one of the best rooms we've ever seen on House Rules" through tears. Unfortunately, their relatively high score of 16 out of 20 wasn't enough to score them a spot in the grand final; Adam and Lisa came out on top with 18 points out of 20; Carole and Russell ended on 17 — and we'll see them in the finale showdown on Sunday night.
It was a bittersweet ending for Candy and Ryan, but the great things are that they a) got their own house completely renovated in the House Rules process and b) have left behind an incredible gift for foster families in need.
