For Marvel fans, there's nothing more goosebump-inducing than hearing the Avengers' theme song. When the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War was released, I couldn't help but have flashbacks to my childhood. If you don't keep up with the latest Marvel news, you may be wondering: Is Infinity War the last Avengers movie? Don't worry, the Marvel reign is not ready to let up.
Staying updated on the Marvel universe can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. The studio has the rights to over 7,000 characters, so the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) could potentially be rolling out movies for generations to come. If you're late to the Marvel train, it's only just hitting its 10th anniversary this year. 2018 marks the 10th anniversary of the release of Iron Man, and almost a decade later the success of the MCU is far superior to any other franchise in Hollywood.
I'm not just saying that because I'm a Marvel fan, either. Since 2008, Marvel Studios has released over 17 films that have grossed more than $13 billion at the global box office. In the next couple of years though, fans are going to see a showdown between Marvel and DC Comics for who produces the best movies. It'll be a tight race, but may the odds be in your favourite superhero's favour.
2018 is already a big year for the Marvel universe, as Black Panther has been a dynamic hit at the box office. Avengers: Infinity War is set to release April 25, and it will likely be another mega-hit. In fact, he movie is predicted to bring in at least $215 million in its opening weekend.
One of the only reasons the film could flounder is because of the sheer number of superheroes with whom viewers have to keep up. The trailer alone includes the Hulk, Black Widow, Iron Patriot, Dr. Strange, Gamora, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Captain America, Black Panther, Okoye, Shuri, Star-Lord, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Thor, Groot, and Loki — and that's not even all of the superheroes that could appear.
If you prefer to see the backstory of each superhero individually, you're in luck. According to an interview with Vanity Fair, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige (and mastermind behind MCU's cinematic success) states that Marvel has already released or plotted out 22 additional MCU films. According to Feige, the studio has "another 20 movies on the docket that are completely different from anything that's come before — intentionally."
Marvel is choosing to keep quiet on a chunk of the future releases, but we also have Deadpool 2, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Venom to look forward to this year. Beyond 2018, there's Captain Marvel, another Avengers film, a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, another chapter in the Guardians of the Galaxy Saga, and much more.
For now, I'll be listening to orchestral arrangements of the Avengers' theme song and hoping I don't cry in the middle of the cinema.
