Another Australian has been added to the cast of The Great Gatsby: Joel Edgerton! Deadline reports that the actor has been cast in the role of Tom Buchanan, husband of Daisy, who will be played by Carey Mulligan. Ben Affleck was previously in talks for the role but had to pull out due to his commitment to direct and star in Argo. Director Baz Luhrmann said about choosing Joel: “In casting Tom one had to find an actor who could credibly be (as Fitzgerald describes him) ‘one of the most powerful ends that ever played football as New Haven,’ had five star acting chops and in the big dramatic showdown scenes between Gatsby and Tom, hold the screen against Leonardo DiCaprio, in the appropriate age group. Any wonder, it has been a long and thorough journey. The simple truth is that Joel came into our rehearsal space in New York and fulfilled all of the above criteria, and then some.”
The Great Gatsby is turning out to be quite the Australian production — there’s the Aussie director, as well as Isla Fisher in the role of Myrtle, Tom’s mistress, and newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker. And the movie is being shot in Sydney! We’re loving the Australian flavour of this upcoming 3D movie (naturally) — what about you?
