We know it’s still early days on MasterChef but we’ve already got some favourites, and one of them proved his talent on Monday night’s show when he won the first top 24 challenge: lifeguard Hayden Quinn from NSW. As a result he was the first contestant to compete against a celebrity chef in the Immunity Challenge last night, but instead of facing off against a top chef, he cooked against Alessandro Pavoni’s star apprentice, Alex. Both Hayden and Alex had to replicate the Agnolotti Bagoss dish from Alessandro’s restaurant Ormeggio, the difference being that Hayden was given a 10-minute head start and Alex had to work without a recipe.
It was up to George, Matt and guest judge Justin North to decide which dish was better during a blind taste test. They were impressed with the look and flavours of Plate 1 (Hayden’s) and noted the charred tomatoes and imperfect pesto of Plate 2 (Alex’s), but when it came down to scoring the dishes they realised it was going to be a close match. They revealed their scores for Alex first (21 out of 30) before George and Matt gave Hayden the same mark they gave Alex. It was Justin’s score of 8 that secured Hayden the victory and awarded him the first immunity of the season! Hayden’s performance certainly proved that he’s “not just the surfy guy from the Northern Beaches”!
