MLA Australia Day Lamb Ad Doesn't Mention Australia Day

This Year's Lamb Ad Has an Important Message

The annual Australia Day lamb ad from the Meat and Livestock Association has arrived (hurrah!), and once again it has people talking. Specifically because this year the ad doesn't mention the words "Australia Day." Instead, the ad has subtly tapped into a groundswell of support for changing the date of Australia Day given its association with the dispossession of the Indigenous people who were here first. The ad also, in a delightfully laconic way, taps into the Australian spirit of sharing and having mates and neighbours over for a barbie to examine the fears and prejudices that bubble away under the surface about so-called "boat people," and those who are different to us.

As Masterchef's Poh Ling Yeow so perfectly says in the ad, "hang on, aren't we all boat people."

The ad features celebrities and sportspeople such as Olympian Cathy Freeman, Sam Kekovich, former rugby player Wendell Sailor, cricketer Adam Gilchrist and comedian Rhys Nicholson.
