For the Modern Family cast, who are currently in Australia, it’s not all work and no play. Qantas threw an exclusive party for the cast and crew at The Sebel Pier One in Sydney’s Walsh Bay on Thursday night, giving the actors and crew a chance to kick up their heels after a day of filming around the area. While locals are super excited about having the stars of the award-winning show in the country, the cast expressed their enthusiasm for Australia and gratitude at the reception they’ve been given. “Oh my god, it has been so amazing to see everyone in love with the show, it has been really, really exciting,” Sofia Vergara told reporters on the red carpet, and her co-stars Ed O’Neill and Julie Bowen said it was their first time travelling here. Eric Stonestreet is on his fourth visit to Australia, and revealed that he enjoyed having lunch at the Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel. Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Ariel Winter have also been here before.
During the party, Jessica Mauboy entertained guests; she appears to be Qantas’ go-to performer, since she was also chosen to sing for Ellen DeGeneres last year. Unfortunately, last night’s soiree wasn’t without drama: Sarah Hyland, who also attended the Sydney premiere of her movie Vampire Academy, left early after being assaulted by a male fan. He reportedly groped her inappropriately when she went out to meet with fans, and she left in tears. Sarah apologised for her early departure on Twitter, writing, “Sorry to all the fans outside the #qantas event that I didn't get to say hi to but I had to leave due to an inappropriate touch of a fan.” Her boyfriend, Matt Prokop, who accompanied her to Australia, also jumped to her defence on social media: “To the a**hole who assaulted Sarah tonight I hope to God you don't see next week. All Sarah wanted to do tonight was say hi to the girls who were waiting outside one douche can ruin it for everyone. Goodnight.” Fans tweeted back to Sarah hoping that this incident hasn’t put her off Australia for good.
