If you’ve flicked to Network Ten at all in the past few weeks, there’s no way you could’ve missed a promo for its latest reality series, The Renovators. Tapping into the successful renovation genre, which is working wonders for Channel Nine with The Block and Top Design, it combines a MasterChef-esque format with tradies, builders, architects, decorators, landscape architects, tools — everyone and everything you need to make a space beautiful. And the challenges are massive! This Sunday’s premiere episode sees the top 26 contestants renovating a dilapidated house from inside-out — in 48 hours. All the rooms need to be fixed up, the outside and garden needs to be taken care of, and it needs to be fully furnished.
The importance of this first challenge, which takes place at “The Workshop,” the biggest TV set in Australia, is that is allows the person the judges feel have contributed most to the renovation to pick which of the six Sydney properties they would like to work on — just like all those MasterChef challenges, a win leads to a huge advantage. With experts like former Vogue Living editor Robyn Holt, award-winning architect Peter Ho and builder Barry du Bois judging and mentoring the diverse group of contestants, and landscape architect Brendan Moar as host, it looks like we could have a whole new appreciation for a set of tools (no pun intended).
The Renovators premieres on Network Ten at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.
