Quick Recap of ABC1 Comedy At Home With Julia, About Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Tim Mathieson

At Home With Julia: Just Good Fun, or Offensive?

ABC1 premiered its new series At Home With Julia last night to an audience of 1.066 million viewers. (You can watch it here.) The four-part “narrative comedy,” which sends up domestic life at The Lodge with Australia’s Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, and her partner, Tim Mathieson, received mixed reviews on Twitter — it was either loved or slammed. The debut episode, “Date Night,” showed Australia’s First Couple trying to fit in some Julia and Tim time around Julia’s busy schedule; their plans for a romantic dinner went awry when the Independents crashed their date. Comedian Amanda Bishop went all out in her impersonation of Julia — the mannerisms, the voice, the hair and costume — while Phil Lloyd as Tim went for a subtler, but still funny, approach. There are three more episodes to come, and while Amanda has said, “We agreed the first couple’s bedroom was off-limits,” do you think At Home With Julia was just good fun, or offensive to our Prime Minister?
