The return of The Block gave Channel Nine a ratings win for its timeslot (7 o’Block), with 1.342 million Aussies tuning in for the return of the renovation series. However, instead of introducing us to the four couples who will be providing us with months of DIY entertainment, this year the opening week format has changed slightly, with eight couples battling it out for a place in the top four.
Lovebirds Jenna and Josh from Victoria were up against Perth couple Aaron and Shannon in the first elimination challenge, which saw the teams decorate one of eight rooms in a big warehouse. Jenna and Josh chose to do up a lounge room while Aaron and Shannon opted for a bedroom.

Each couple had 24 hours and $5,000 to work on their rooms, with Josh and Jenna presenting a ’60s-inspired lounge room with pops of colour, and Aaron and Shannon finishing off a black and white bedroom. After a full day’s work Jenna and Josh were announced the victors and we had to say goodbye to Aaron and Shannon.
It’s great that Channel Nine is refreshing the original formula with something a little different to kick off the series. It also means we get a taste of the teams’ designing styles before they have to renovate a whole house. Are you a fan of this elimination week format?
