Hizzah! The business end of So You Think You Can Dancehas begun. Sort of. Last night we were treated to the Top 20 Showcase, where dancers got to perform in their own style. No-one was eliminated, but we did find out the pairings for the rest of the competition. And while the ep was a blatant attempt to stretch the season out just a liiiitle longer before the competition begins, it was still a fun respite between auditions and eliminations. Not to mention, the two-hour dance-fest was a great chance for us to get a jump start on picking faves.
Don and Gaz
The comp's requisite b boys took to the stage for a fun (and funny) Project Moda choried ode to 70s kung fu films. Don's energy was infectious (early prediction: fan favourite?), while Gaz' dopey giant get up was down right lovable. I'm a little nervous about how these guys will cross over to other genres, but they're bound to be entertainers.
Jess P., Matt, Keiran and Will
Jason Gilkison, be still my beating heart, I want you to choreograph something for me. That ribbon work at the end? Divine. Really, with a routine like that, this foursome could do no wrong. Jess smoldered, Will and Keiran sailed through and even bogan Matt was a standout. Job well done.
Issi and Robbie
They may be the comp's youngest dancers, but the petite pair sure do pack a punch. Emotional and haunting, the duo bought everyone to tears—including themselves. Awww.
Doug and Ivy
I love a good Broadway jazz as much the next person, but after Issi and Robbie's haunting contemporary, Doug and Ivy fell a little short. Yes, the opening leap was superb (and not a little painful to watch), but I was wanting something a little more from these two. Hopefully, they can lift when they both take on ballroom next week.
Jess S., Ilona and Phillippe
To quote just about everyone on stage last night, this routine was HOT! Jess and Ilona played two girls battling it out over a ripped six packa guy. Sure, I could say that I'm a little worried about Phillipe in more disciplined/traditional styles, but I'd rather talk about his best asset: the boy is ripped. Jess is definitely one to watch, catching the camera's attention whenever she was on screen. As for Ilona: not much comes to mind, to be brutally honest. I was too busy following that chest.
Nick, Jessie H., Heath and Grace
By far the most technical routine of the night and quite possibly my favourite. I mean, how can you not love a Twilight-themed comtemp performed to brooding perfection. It's difficult to pick a standout of the group, but I'm going to make some waves by saying Heath. Big call, I know, but what can I say? I was devastated when he broke his foot last year and had to go home.
Renee, Carly and Mikhaela
Yes, this one was fun and flirty, but like Doug and Ivy's Broadway, it fell kind of flat. Maybe it had something to do with following such an amazing contemporary, but I was left wanting something a little meatier from this trio. The talent is there, after all.
- How great was it to watch a piece of Jason Coleman and Matt Lee choreography? Spot on way to start and end the night, I say.
- What did you think of next week's match ups? I can't wait to see Gaz and Ivy flirt up a storm, or Heath and Jess P take the stage (bless their blonde souls), but what do you make of the Philipe and Renee combo. Does anyone else find it a bit... awkward?
So, what was your take on last night's ep? If the quality of last night's show is any indication, we sure are in for another entertaining series of Dance. Oh, and did we mention Taylor Swift will be performing? We know: Swifty! On Dance! Let the elimination rounds begin!</p>
