Emily Giffin's chick-lit novel Something Borrowed pretty much reads exactly like a screenplay for a romantic comedy, so it's no surprise that the first trailer for the film looks like a fairly loyal adaptation. Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson star as Rachel and Darcy, a pair of childhood best friends that couldn't be more opposite (Rachel's the mousy, nice girl; Darcy is the beautiful bitch). Their friendship gets mucked up when Rachel realises her feelings for Darcy's dreamy fiancé Dex (Colin Egglesfield, from the Melrose Place reboot), and sleeps with him ahead of her best friend's wedding. Uh-oh. Some fans of the book were displeased with how the film was cast, but I think the trailer may alleviate some of the doubt. Kate Hudson has no trouble at all playing the snobby mean girl (she's basically reprising her Bride Wars role), while Egglesfield is actually a breath of fresh air among his fellow famous faces. I'm most happy to see that John Krasinski's character Ethan has been beefed up for the movie and that he'll take on a lot of the comic relief here — à la his role in It's Complicated.
The trailer looks cookie-cutter to say the very least, but it's also got some promise (mostly because of the guys). Watch it for yourself and weigh in when you read more.
