Taylor Swift Gets Candid About Lover, Scooter Braun, and Sexism in the Music Industry

Taylor Swift recently sat down with CBS Sunday Morning, and got completely candid about her career and new album, Lover. While speaking to journalist Tracy Smith about the difficulties she's faced as a young woman in the music industry, the 29-year-old pop star called out some of the sexist language used to describe female artists. "A man does something, it's strategic; a woman does the same thing, it's calculated. A man is allowed to react; a woman can only overreact," she said.

The "Me!" singer went on to discuss her clash with talent agent Scooter Braun after he put down $300 million to buy Big Machine Records — the label that still owns Taylor's first six albums, even though she split from the company in November 2018. Taylor maintained that the CEO of Big Machine Records, Scott Borchetta, didn't tell her that Scooter was going to purchase the company. "I knew he would sell my music, I knew he would do that," she said. "I couldn't believe who he sold it to because we've had endless conversations about Scooter Braun, and he has 300 million reasons to conveniently forget those conversations."

Taylor then opened up about Lover and the personal meanings behind some of the songs, notably "Soon You'll Get Better" (a tribute to her mother, Andrea Swift). "I don't think I have written a song quite like that before. It's just a tough one," Taylor continued. "Writing about it was really emotional." She also gave viewers a behind-the-scenes look of her music video for "Lover," revealing how she filmed the shot of herself swimming in a fish pool with onscreen love interest Christian Owens.
