Trailer For The Road Starring Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron

Movie Preview: Viggo, Charlize and Guy in The Road

In the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel The Road, Viggo Mortensen stars as a man coping emotionally and physically in a post-apocalyptic world and trying to defend his family. The book uses an apocalyptic scenario as a way to meditate on themes of humanity and the effect is stirring.

I don't know if it's the marketing campaign or if this is the route the entire movie is taking, but I'm surprised this trailer makes The Road look more like an action-packed thriller (hello War of the Worlds 2.0), rather than a solemn journey into our worst nightmare. Either way, it looks extremely creepy. The Road is released on January 28 and also stars Charlize Theron, Robert Duvall and Guy Pearce. Check out the trailer.

Hey Buzz, are you planning to do a Book Club for The Road? Because I've always wanted to the read the book, esp now with a film adaptation coming out. If you're planning to cover it, maybe I'll wait and read it then.

Actually the sort of "action movie" feel of it isn't entirely misplaced. The book is rather suspenseful and scary, if slow and quiet. It has moments of action. The only thing that irks me is that they seem to have added in a lot of context to the story (the wife, what happened to the world), which could be fine if they do it right. But it could be very wrong. I will withhold judgment until I see it; looking forward to it. Plus, I love Viggo.

I loved this book, it was quite frightening to think that this may be a reality someday. Looks like they really beefed up the wife role for Charlize...dunno if I like that

I read this book in 1 day.. could not put it down.. Extremely excited to see this in theaters especially with that cast! I've heard that they made the wife's part larger since they got Charlize which should be interesting since it was such a definite son/father story.

Apparently Heathcote had no idea about the apocalyptic effects in the trailer, they aren't in the film. Just used here as a marketing tool. I can see the point. Get people into the cinema and then they see the stark reality of the film. I was perplexed as it seems so far removed from the book and indeed from the directors style.

now that I'm home and have speakers I watched the trailer.. I don't think its portrayed as an action movie, it looks utterly terrifying. when I read the book, my heart was pounding through most of it.

Like Buzz said, I don't like that they make it look like a thriller. What the hell? This film doesn't need to build an audience with explosions, car chases etc., it already has one!

Finally! I was so upset it was pushed back, but at least it's in time for next Oscar season. Now I have to read the book.

this book was utterly brilliant, as are all books by Cormac McCarthy in my opinion, and I can't wait to see this film
