Anyone who has read Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet would know that it’s a beautifully-written, iconic Australian novel penned by a master of prose. It deals with huge themes about life, family and spirituality set against the backdrop of Perth in the 1940s and 1950s, with the stories told through two completely different families, the Lambs and the Pickles, living under the same roof at One Cloud Street. Like most beloved works of literature, taking it from the page to the screen was never going to be an easy task, especially when the author has previously said, “No director wanted to do it. You don’t want to be remembered as the bloke who stuffed up Cloudstreet.” But director Matthew Saville gave everything he had for the 14 months of the miniseries’ production and says, “I knew it would be, and would probably remain, the most extraordinary experience of my professional life.” He gathered a fine cast that combines the talents of Stephen Curry, Essie Davis, Emma Booth, Todd Lasance, Geoff Morrell, Kerry Fox, Callan McAuliffe and more up-and-coming stars. And if the trailer is anything to go by, this three-part series looks like an outstanding production. Will you be watching Cloudstreet?
Cloudstreet premieres on Showcase, Sunday May 22 at 8:30 p.m.
