Had we seen Christina Aguilera perform the US national anthem at the Super Bowl yesterday, chances are we would’ve had no idea that she made a mistake with the lyrics. (In fact there was so much vocal gymnastics that it was hard to tell what the words were.) But if the same thing happened to someone singing the Australian national anthem, we’d be right on it. As Christina got caught up in her rousing rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner”, she mistakenly sang “What so proudly we watched, at the twilight’s last gleaming,” instead of, “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming.” Her explanation for the gaffe? She said in a statement: “I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place. I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through.” Watch her performance below and see if you can spot her slip-up.
