Elizabeth Gilbert's travel memoir Eat, Pray, Love has garnered a lot of praise—and some backlash—and soon we'll get to judge the big-screen adaptation. Today brings us the film's first trailer, which gives away a lot more than the photos we saw a few weeks ago. For those of you who aren't familiar with the story, Julia Roberts stars as Elizabeth, an author who suffers a bit of an identity crisis when her marriage falls apart. Determined to make peace with herself and the world, Elizabeth sets off on a yearlong journey to Italy, India, and Indonesia.
Right off the bat, the movie offers a lot more backstory than what we read about in the book (where Elizabeth's ex-husband and former lover are discussed only in flashback). It could be a smart idea to shed more light on where Elizabeth is coming from, since I know many of you thought she wavered on the side of preachy and annoying. I'm just hoping that spending extra time on Elizabeth's stateside life won't cut into the screen time of her journey, because the gorgeous scenery is really what should set the movie apart from the book. Check it out for yourself.
