Reports have come in this morning that Mr. Yunupingu, the lead singer of Australian indigenous band Yothu Yindi, died overnight at his home in the Northern Territory. He was 56. He had been fighting kidney disease.
Mr. Yunupingu co-founded Yothu Yindi, which means “child and mother,” in 1986. The band is most known for their 1991 song “Treaty.” Mr. Yunupingu was also named Australian of the Year in 1992, and in 2012 he was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.
Our thoughts are with his loved ones.
Out of respect for his family, we have not published Mr. Yunupingu's image.
