No “Barbie” Sequel on the Horizon? Here’s Why Margot Robbie Is Keeping Us Waiting

“Barbie” herself has made it clear that she isn’t ready to entertain the idea of a sequel just yet. Despite the blockbuster success, Margot Robbie, who portrayed the iconic doll in the film, believes that “Barbie” was crafted as a standalone cinematic experience.

“I think we put everything we had into this one,” Robbie recently told the Associated Press. “We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something. [Director] Greta [Gerwig] put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”

Now, we all know “Barbie” took the box office by storm, raking in a staggering $1.4 billion globally. The film became a cultural sensation, showcasing that audiences have an insatiable appetite for original storytelling.

With Barbie Land a hot topic, the burning question is whether we’ll be treated to a sequel.

Will There Be a “Barbie” Sequel?

Back in June, Robbie hinted at the possibility of a sequel. She threw out the notion that the sequel could venture in a million different directions but wisely stressed the importance of focusing on the current flick.

“I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels,” she told Time.

Enter Greta Gerwig, the creative force behind “Barbie”, who’s been dodging the sequel queries like a pro. Initially, she played it cool, telling the New York Times, “At this moment, it’s all I’ve got”. However, in another chat, Gerwig expressed a desire to explore the vast Barbie universe without necessarily revisiting the same characters.

“Barbie” took us on a wild ride with Robbie’s Stereotypical Barbie navigating the real world and stumbling upon the patriarchy’s impact on humans. With Ryan Gosling’s Ken recruiting his doll army to take over Barbie Land, the narrative unfolded into a plot to restore the feminist utopia. The ending, though, left us on a conclusive note with Robbie’s Barbie opting to ditch the doll life and embrace humanity.

So, as one “Barbie” tale wraps up, the sequel mystery lingers. Will we dive back into Barbie Land? Only time will tell, but for now, let’s relish the magic of “Barbie”‘s first adventure.
