Celeb Spellcheck has returned — archived posts and all — after going dark from March 20 until March 28.

Citing that they needed to “rethink” how the account was to proceed, the famed Instagram page announced their return with a clue-worthy Insta Story featuring everyone’s favourite The Hills couple, Heidi Montag and Spencer Prat. a.k.a Speidi.

While there was no caption, it seems the anonymous owner of the account dropped a telling clue in the form of the book Montag is holding — You Can Profit From A Monetary Crisis by Harry Lipton. Hmm…

While we’re not 100% sure if this refers to them monetising their account (or what the even means for the future), we do know that this is a popcorn worthy saga.

What Exactly Is Going On With Instagram Account Celeb Spellcheck?

When Elyse Knowles captioned an Instagram story with “wallah” (a misspelling of the French word ‘voila’), it became nationwide news.

While notably a very innocent mistake, things became much worse for the reality TV star turned influencer when she was caught out by an eagle-eyed and mysterious Instagram account — Celeb Spellcheck.

Not the first influencer to be thrust into the spotlight with a spelling error, Knowles was undoubtedly the most notorious, with even US Instagram influencer The Fat Jewish posting about it to his 10.4 million followers.

And then, as though she had offended a nation, Knowles was forced to defend herself.

“I make mistakes all the time (on social media). It’s who I am,” The Block contestant told Stellar in an interview. “I haven’t been deeply affected by it at all because I spell things wrong all the time. I don’t know. I can’t spell for sh*t! I know that, and I’m OK with that. But there’s a global pandemic and the whole of the Australian media is reporting on one word. I’m still getting notifications every day that people are writing about it. But if it gave someone a laugh, then … whatever. I chuckled over it, too.”

While Knowles let it slide like water off a Byron Bay chicken’s back, the Instagram handle (and anonymous owner) who caught the faux pas went up by thousands of followers — spawning countless stories and grid posts, poking fun at influencers and reality stars and their ability (or sometimes inability) to spell.

Over the weekend of March 20 and 21, 2021, Celeb Spellcheck’s Instagram went dark. All posts were removed as were the highlight reels and fans began to question why. Most notably, according to the account itself, people questioned whether an influencer had become salty and was taking legal action against them. They hadn’t and in one single post, we found out what had happened.

“Thank you so much for all your lovely messages,” the post read. “I wanted to let you know that I am completely fine! I’m not being sued (that I know of, lol) & I’m not at risk of having my identity revealed.

“I will be taking a little break while I think about the future of this account.”

The comments on the post had been turned off and over 6.7 k followers at the time of publication had engaged with the letter which went over two slides. The second one reiterated the first: “To clarify, nothing has ‘happened’ to bring this on! This is just something I’ve been thinking about for a while.”

But then, not even two days later, something did happen. Local influencers began to ask their fans to unfollow the account, citing “bullying”.

Led by Bachelor In Paradise star Keira Maguire and mummy-influencer Sophia Cachia, the women in varying threads accused the Instagram account of choosing “to demoralise influencers” and asked for their fans to “consider this before supporting them with a follow a like & comment or even sharing it with a friend [sic]”.

Maguire also said she was disappointed to see “many high profile individuals/accounts/celebrities/companies regularly comment and engage” on the account and even went as far to say that “years ago, I loved the page. It was genuinely so funny!”, however, after “factually incorrect information/accusations (especially at a time I was diagnosed, medicated and a risk to myself)”, she was no longer supporting it.

While it hasn’t impacted her work, Maguire did state that it has affected her mental health and asked that the page “reconsider” their approach and use their talents for “something greater”.

On the other side of the ring, Instagram account Aussie Influencer Opinions came to the defence of Spellcheck.

“Oh for the love of GOD. When, WHEN, did Celeb Spellcheck ever ‘bully’ Keira?” they wrote in an Instagram story. According to the account, Maguire had broken “lockdown rules during stage 4 lockdown” where she had a friend over “when the law was no guests”.

“And Celeb Spellcheck called her out on it…so apparently that is bullying?”

At the time of writing, Celeb Spellcheck had taken to their stories to defend themselves, however, it was swiftly removed as was every trace of their rebuttal.

Whether Celeb Spellcheck and its mysterious owner lives to fight another day remains unseen but if Maguire and Cachia have anything to do with it, it doesn’t seem likely.
