Technically, selfies aren’t allowed at the Met Gala. The rule was imposed by Anna Wintour in 2015, likely to keep the affair private and exclusive, though, of course, it has been broken many times over the years. Memorably, in 2017, Kendall Jenner shared a bathroom selfie that included Zoë Kravitz, Cara Delevingne, Behati Prinsloo, Jourdan Dunn, Lily Donaldson, Bella Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski, and Alexander Wang. That same year, Kim Kardashian posted a photo of Jenner dancing with A$AP Rocky, who showed up fashionably late with Rihanna to the 2023 event.
Each year since, celebrities seem to share more photos of themselves at the Met Gala – and they almost always include at least one or two massively star-studded bathroom selfies. At the 2023 Met Gala, Billie Eilish, Maya Hawke, Elle Fanning, and Halle Bailey kept up with tradition and posed for selfies together in the lavatory mirror. Many more stars took out their phones, snapped photos, and shared them to social media as well, though no one could compare to the heavily bedazzled Lil Nas X, who managed to capture snaps of himself with everyone from Doja Cat to Pete Davidson.
