Puffer jackets might not be a new addition to Melbourne locals, but this year’s Melbourne Fashion Festival took them to a whole new level.

Highlighting an emerging winter trend, puffer material and textures were rife both on and off the runway, leaning into bold texture and exaggerated silhouettes.

Taking the classic puffer jacket material and re-imagining it, designers are experimenting with different styles of outerwear, such as the below shawl from Viktoria & Woods.

Crafted in a rich burgundy red colour, this Viktoria & Woods puffer scarf could be worn in a variety of ways — adding texture and volume to an outfit, without taking away the sleek-ness of the overall look.

Often, outerwear can bog us down. In the cooler months, it’s necessary to keep and dress practically, which can sometimes feel as though it takes away from the creativity of dressing. However, with puffer-styles becoming more and more popular, there’s no excuse not to rock outerwear in a chic way.

Australian designer Dion Lee, gave us another great example of chic puffer-styles in his most recent spring / summer runway showing at New York Fashion Week.

Opting for a grungy cropped-style, the bulkiness of the fabrication offsets the tight mini skirt and crop underneath in an effortless way. This mismatching of textures is something that designers are nailing right now, and its impact is clear — more is more, but only when it’s done right.

With the right styling, “more” can actually look like “less”. In the case with puffer material, it can become easy to feel like a man from the moon — bouncing around like a marshmallow with too many layers and no style.

However, with the interesting puffer styles on the market right now and a little bit of styling advice, you could rock this new trend in a highly fashionable and practical way.
