“Guardians of the Galaxy”‘s James and Sean Gunn Have 3 Other Siblings in Hollywood

It’s pretty rare that a group of siblings all follow a similar career path, but in Hollywood, the phenomenon happens surprisingly often. There are, of course, many iconic sibling duos like Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, but in some cases, a group of three or more family members share journeys in the entertainment industry, like Chris, Luke, and Liam Hemsworth. The Gunn Brothers, consisting of James, Brian, Matt, Patrick, and Sean Gunn, are also all known for their work in this same world. James is best recognized for writing and directing the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, while Matt and Brian have taken on careers as writers. Patrick is a film executive, and the youngest of the Gunn brothers, Sean, is an actor. Sean has had some memorable roles, including Kirk Gleason in “Gilmore Girls,” and Kraglin Obfonteri in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the most recent installment in the franchise, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”

James Gunn

The oldest of the Gunn brothers, James was born in August 1966 in St. Louis, Missouri, according to the LA Times. Gunn’s childhood was not easy, and he later revealed to the Washington Post in 2017 that he experienced hardships due to his father’s alcoholism. “I grew up in a dysfunctional family, and I’m not betraying anything by saying: My dad has been sober for a long time, but he was not sober when I was young … And that created a lot of turmoil in the family. I came from many, many alcoholics in my family.” This turmoil only made him grow closer to his younger brothers, and together, they bonded over film and comic books.

By his teenage years, Gunn started taking an interest in making movies himself with an 8mm camera. As a young adult, he briefly attended college but dropped out to launch a career in music with his band, The Icons. The group wasn’t successful, and after his stint, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Louis University, and a MFA in creative writing from Columbia University. Following college, he made his professional debut and wrote “Tromeo and Juliet” in 1996. Just a few years later, Gunn wrote “Scooby Doo,” “Dawn of the Dead,” and “Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed,” within the span of two years. He is most known for writing and directing the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies, in addition to “The Suicide Squad” (2021). In October 2022, Gunn, along with Peter Safran, were named co-chairmen and chief executive officers of DC Studios, per Deadline.

Matt Gunn

Matt Gunn was born in April 1972, and graduated from St. Louis University High School in 1990. He started his career as a writer in the late 1990s with the film, “Man About Town,” and is most known for his longtime comedic and political writing on HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher,” which earned him a Writers Guild of America Award for outstanding comedy/variety talk series.

Sean Gunn

Sean Gunn was born in May 1974, and graduated from St. Louis University High School in 1992. After high school, Gunn attended the Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago and graduated in 1996, per Backstage. He landed minor acting roles in the late 1990s, and by the year 2000, he was starring as Kirk Gleason on the beloved WB show, “Gilmore Girls.” His character was recurring on the series throughout its tenure. After a number of acting gigs in film and television, Gunn was cast as Kraglin Obfonteri in his brother’s 2014 film “Guardians of the Galaxy” and has since reprised the role in each installment of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” film franchise, as well as films like “Avengers: Endgame” and “Thor: Love and Thunder.”

Gunn recently praised his brother James in an interview with Variety following the news that James was named as co-chairman and chief executive officer of DC Studios. The actor shared, “I don’t tend to get too surprised by what happens with my brother … There was a moment of like, ‘Holy sh*t,’ but he’s cut out for it. He’s built for it. He works as hard as anyone I’ve ever known. He eats, sleeps, and this stuff, and he’s good at it, and he loves telling stories. …Yeah, I was surprised for a second, but I was like ‘That’s you, man. You’ve got it.'”
