Where You Can Find the Original Cast of Hamilton in Their Other Projects

The original cast of Hamilton is coming to your screens very soon, thanks to the upcoming release of the smash hit musical on Disney+ on July 3. For most of the insanely talented cast, though, the Founding Fathers musical is just the tip of the iceberg of their fantastic careers on stage and screen. While Hamilton was a breakout role for some, they’ve all got impressive résumés, and several have been able to parlay their higher profiles into even more roles and bigger projects.

Lin-Manuel Miranda in In The Heights

Miranda’s first Broadway smash came in 2008, when he wrote and starred in the Tony-winning musical In the Heights, centered on a single week in the lives of the Latino neighborhoods of Washington Heights.

Lin-Manuel Miranda in Mary Poppins Returns

In the Disney sequel, Miranda played Jack, a London lamplighter and handyman who knows all about Mary Poppins. He joins the Banks family and Mary Poppins in their adventures and gets to show off his song-and-dance skills in several of the movie’s splash musical numbers.

Lin-Manuel Miranda in Fosse/Verdon

Miranda appeared in the FX miniseries as Roy Scheider, who, in real life, starred in All That Jazz as a character loosely based on Bob Fosse himself.

Leslie Odom Jr. in Murder on the Orient Express

In the 2017 remake, Odom was part of an ensemble cast that included Daisy Ridley, Kenneth Branagh, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, and more. He played Dr. Arbuthnot, a doctor and former soldier who’s in a secret relationship that would cause more than a little scandal if revealed.

Leslie Odom Jr. in Harriet

Odom tackled the role of William Still, a real-life abolitionist, in the Harriet Tubman biopic. Still was a Philadelphia-based activist who became a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad and worked alongside Tubman in her quest to rescue slaves from the South.

Renée Elise Goldsberry in Rent

The final performance of the iconic Broadway show Rent was filmed for theatrical and home release in 2008, so audiences far from New York were able to experience Goldsberry’s performance as the fiercely independent dancer Mimi, years before she took on another strong-willed leading lady: Angelica Schyler, the role she won a Tony for.

Renée Elise Goldsberry in Altered Carbon

Goldsberry jumped into sci-fi as Quellcrist “Quell” Falconer on the Netflix series. Like her counterpart in the novels on which the show is based, Quell is a master strategist and a brilliant scientist who leads the rebel “Envoys” with everything she’s got.

Goldsberry tackled the role of Catherine, a Florida stepmother trying to help hold her family together in the wake of terrible tragedy, in this indie film.

Long before she was Hamilton‘s soft-spoken leading lady Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, Soo played lovelorn countess Natasha Rostova in the off-Broadway iteration of this quirky, electro-folk-pop reimagining of War and Peace.

Soo went for a non-musical role in her most recent Broadway project: a play co-starring Uma Thurman.

Daveed Diggs on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Diggs joined the Netflix comedy in season three for a recurring arc, fresh off of winning a Tony for his fast-talking double role as the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson. He played Perry, a philosophy student at Columbia who inspired Kimmy and became a friend and eventual love interest as she pursued her own education.

Daveed Diggs in Blindspotting

Not only did Diggs co-star in this 2018 indie dramedy, he also co-wrote and produced it. The movie follows a convicted felon who’s only a few days out from finishing his probation when he witnesses an incident of police brutality that haunts him.

Diggs joined Jake Gyllenhaal, Toni Colette, and others in this horror satire, popping up as a rising young artist who finds himself on the outskirts of the unfolding horrors.

Anthony Ramos in A Star Is Born

Ramos’s supporting roles as John Laurens and Phillip Hamilton prepared him well for his first major movie. In the 2018 version of the classic Hollywood romance, Ramos had a small role as Ramon, who provides friendship and support to Lady Gaga‘s Ally as her music career skyrockets her to stardom.

Ramos had a leading role on the two-season Netflix series, playing Mars, a new version of the character played by series creator Spike Lee in the 1986 movie that inspired the show.

Christopher Jackson in In the Heights

Before embodying the solid dignity of George Washington in Hamilton, Jackson already had a long and steady career on Broadway. One of his most memorable was definitely originating the role of aspiring businessman Benny in In the Heights, alongside pal and future Hamilton collaborator Miranda.

Jasmine Cephas Jones in Mistress America

Around the same time that her roles as Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds were getting her more and more attention, Jones’s film with Greta Gerwig came out. She plays Nicolette, part of a circle of college friends struggling to adjust and letting their messy personal lives influence their art.

Nearly a decade before he was nominated for a Tony for his turn as the petulant King George III, Groff snagged his first Tony nod in this edgy rock musical. He played Melchior, a 19th-century German teenage rebel who tries to help his friends throw off the repression forced on them by the adults around them.

Possibly Groff’s most famous non-theatrical role is also the one where he doesn’t even show his face. He voiced iceman Kristoff in the 2013 original and again in 2019’s sequel – in which he finally got his own song!
