The king’s coronation was held on May 6, drawing crowds of royal watchers – both in-person in London and online – to the ceremony that formalized King Charles III’s role as head of the Church of England. Throughout the event, fans couldn’t help but notice the very handsome man standing behind the royal, Major Johnny Thompson.

The queen’s former most senior bodyguard, now the king’s new equerry, initially became somewhat of an internet sensation back in September 2022 when eagle-eyed fans noticed the attractive member of the security team at the events following Queen Elizabeth’s death. Since then, he’s been nicknamed “Major Eye Candy,” and social media has been looking out for any Thompson sightings at royal events, including Saturday’s coronation. The longtime member of the royal family’s security detail served in the British army since 2006.

Thompson certainly didn’t go unnoticed on Saturday, as he stood by Prince Louis and Queen Camilla as they crowned the king during the formal ceremony at Westminster Abbey. “Must admit there were times when I was a bit distracted today,” one Twitter user wrote alongside a close-up of the lieutenant, while another hilariously joked, “I would camp out on The Mall in the rain without a tent for three days for a glimpse of this man.” The equerry indeed looked dapper in a ceremonial dress uniform.
