Julia Fox is addressing ageism in the entertainment industry. In a series of TikTok videos, posted on 14 Nov., the “Uncut Gems” star responded to comments about her age, and outlined how it had affected her in the past. “I literally cried on my 27th birthday because I could no longer say ”mid-twenties’,” she says. “I’d officially be in my late-twenties, so this is how deep this sh*t is for women. In the entertainment industry, 30 is f*cking considered old.”

Now 32-years-old, Fox goes on to detail what happened on that specific birthday in a second TikTok, talking directly to the camera in a casual black vest top, wearing no makeup with bleached eyebrows. She says she stayed in her bed the whole day and her BFF Harmony flew into see her. While her friends attempted to shower her with candles and cake, she was having none of it. “I was such a tyrant about it, because I wanted the day to pass,” she says.

Fox’s story comes with an important message as the fashion muse reveals the sad news that her friend, Harmony, died. “She’s not even going to have the privilege of getting older,” she says. “We deny ourselves these milestones, for what?”

Fans flooded her TikTok with comments about how she had opened their eyes. One wrote, “Just turned 27 and this really hit home. This was the realization I needed, thank you!” Another added, “Every day that we wake up is a day to celebrate.”

It’s hard to believe that Fox has ever felt insecure about her age, but her latest TikTok’s prove she wants to speak out on the matter. And she is using her unique sense of style to further push the point. The actor, who is the current face of the KNWLS autumn/winter 22 campaign, arrived at the CFDA Fashion Awards on 7 Nov. wearing a striking cutout dress with wet-effect grey hair. “This is a love letter to getting older. We’re embracing getting older,” she told Vogue on the red carpet.

While it’s unlikely we’re all about to don risqué outfits and dye our hair grey, seizing the day and appreciating growing older is a trend we can get on board with.
