The Masked Singer is coming back on August 10! Ever since winner Cody Simpson as the Robot revealed himself in the season finale in October, people have been keen to release their inner detectives and deduce which Aussie celeb is behind the mask all over again.
Take a singing show, add mystery and a bit of extra spectacle . . . and that's The Masked Singer. Bring on season two in 2020!
What will the Masked Singer masks be in 2020?
The Masked Singer in 2020 promises 12 new ornate masks: the Dragonfly, the Hammerhead, the Kitten, the Wizard, the Frillneck, the Sloth, the Cactus, the Goldfish, the Bushranger, the Queen, the Puppet and the Echidna.
Last year's masks were designed by costume designer Tim Chappel, who won an Oscar for his work on The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, with Lizzy Gardiner in 1994.
Who is under each Masked Singer mask?
We'll just have to wait for our first sets of clues to come out to start to figure out who the 12 new celebrities are. We can be assured that the celebrities will be a mix of trained singers and people just giving it a crack, who will compete in face-offs and be revealed one-by-one.
But we do already have some thoughts about whose personality might suit the prickly Cactus, or who is the kind of swaggering buccaneer of Australian culture and would be the perfect Bushranger (we'll tell you later . . .).
The first batch of untethered clues promise Hollywood actors (note the plural), a big name from an Emmy-winning TV series, recording artists with 22 Platinum and 11 Gold records between them, a total of 13 ARIA Awards potentially spread across the cast, a triple Olympian, multiple Logie winners, and either two World Cup champions, or someone with two World Cup wins . . . And who knows how many of these credits potentially belong to the very same person?
Last year's contestants were: Gretel Killeen (Octopus), Brett Lee (Parrot), Nikki Webster (Alien), Wendell Sailor (Rhino), Darren McMullen (Prawn), Adam Brand (Dragon), Kate Ceberano (Lion), Paulini (Spider), Deni Hines (Unicorn), Gorgi Coghlan (Monster) and runner-up Rob Mills (Wolf).
Who are the judges of The Masked Singer in 2020?
Dave Hughes, Jackie O and Dannii Minogue will return as judges and expert guessers. But it has been confirmed by The Daily Telegraph that Lindsay Lohan is not able to return from her home in Dubai due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. We'll miss Lindsay's far-fetched guesses and feigned looks of surprise when a local celebrity she did not know was unmasked. The final panellist, replacing Lindsay, is comedian Urzila Carlson.
Who is the host of The Masked Singer?
Host Osher Günsberg will return for season two, and was confirmed at Network Ten's Upfronts in October.
How has The Masked Singer been impacted by coronavirus?
Talking to News.com.au in May, the EVP and Chief Content Officer for ViacomCBS Australia & New Zealand, Beverley McGarvey, said they had cast "some very exciting celebrities", noting that many high-profile people were "hunkering down" in Australia due to the pandemic.
A live studio audience is unlikely due to social distancing requirements, and COVID-19 also means that Lindsay Lohan will not be returning as a judge. Domestic border closures may also impact on which celebrities are available to star.
Beverley said the show was due to begin shooting in a couple of months time. "If there was ever a show made for lockdown, it was this. People are in masks anyway.
"The main thing is, we're committed to making the show and we will definitely have to do things differently. The Masked Singer won't look like it did last year, it couldn't possibly, but we might find some ways to do things a bit better than we did last year."
When will The Masked Singer air?
The Masked Singer will premiere on Monday, Aug 10. If it follows last year's pattern, it'll run on Monday and Tuesday nights at 7:30 p.m.
