Chef Andy Allen (and winner of MasterChef season four), food critic Melissa Leong and restauranteur and chef Jock Zonfrillo are the new MasterChef judges, after Matt Preston, George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan left the show last year, citing a contract dispute. Learn more about the new judges here.
Talking to TV Tonight, Network 10's Head of Programming Daniel Monaghan called the new judges a "breath of fresh air into the series". "The new judges are really settling in very well. Whatever happened with the old Masterchef, we'll let bygones be bygones but this is the shot in the arm the show needed."
We don't yet know who the mentors on the season will be, but we do know thatKaty Perry will appear as a guest judge for an Immunity Challenge, according to 10 daily. She visited the MasterChef kitchen while in Australia for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup and a bushfire relief concert in regional Victoria. It's a great touch, considering her song "Hot n Cold" has played over the opening credits for 11 seasons.
Network 10 confirmed to TV Tonight in February that Heston Blumenthal, described as a "long-time member of the MasterChef Australia family", who has appeared on the show for the last five season, would not be a part of the upcoming season.

The season features 23 contestants from the past 11 seasons of the show, taking another shot at the victory, from season one runner-up, Poh Ling Yeow, to last year's second place, Tessa Boersma.
Callum Hann who came second in season two described the calibre of his competitors: "Everyone who's here is at the top of their game. This is going to be really, really rough. There's cookbook authors, TV presenters, restaurant owners and those who just missed out."
Monaghan told TV Tonight that you might see Back to Win as a "celebrity version [of the show], but it is not". "They are there to win. They want this crown, they fumble and stumble and they are hungry to win."
The season was originally meant to feature 24 contestants, but Ben Ungermann, who came second on season nine, before launching ice cream parlour Ungermann Brothers, was removed from the show after he was arrested. Endemol Shine confirmed to 10 daily that Ben had left the competition, and that the issue is "of a personal nature". "As this is a police matter, we will not be making further comment." The incident was not related to the series.
