“It’s the Devil’s Leaf”! Masterchef’s Trent Vu Says He Won’t Touch Lemon Myrtle Ever Again

MasterChef

It’s one thing to be undone by the pressure of the MasterChef Australia kitchen, but to be undone by an overpowering shrub is another story.

For Trent Vu, 24, the hit series’ very first eliminated contestant, it will be a while before he ever touches lemon myrtle again.

“Never! I don’t even want to look at it. Don’t want to think about it. Curse!” he joked with POPSUGAR Australia after his elimination. “It’s the devil’s leaf!”

Vu was sent home after overpowering his chicken dish with the Australian shrub, however, to him, it was “peak Trent!”.

“It wouldn’t be me if I didn’t crash and burn,” Vu said, before adding. “That’s just me. I am chaotic even at home. I’m just a mess. You should see my kitchen after I’ve made a dessert!”

On the day he got the chop, Vu knew it was going to be him, in fact, he had a feeling.

“I was up against four perfect dishes. Everyone else did so well. I love Linda and Dan, they are two of the nicest people you will ever meet and Yoyo is like my aunty, even though she is younger than me. Amir has been one of my friends from day one, so I’d feel bad sending any one of them home.”

Unfortunately for the marketing executive, Vu learned something about himself he wishes he knew before going on the show.

“I learned I’m terrible under pressure,” he said. “Everyone else is running around and so you’re getting secondhand stress from everyone. There’s 24 ovens and it’s hot. It really is just like a pressure cooker situation and that was the hardest part, just getting my head around how to cook in that kitchen.”

While we didn’t get to see a whole lot from him, we can tell you that he has incredible passion and an infectious personality (one that has truly put a smile on our face) which is why his next endeavour is so exciting.

“Im just going to keep on with my food blog and shoot some fun content. I’m shooting all of these videos, recreating iconic MasterChef dishes. I’ve done Adriano Zumbo’s croquembouche, Peter Gilmore’s snow egg and Reynold Palermo’s ‘down the rabbit hole’, so stay tuned for that!”

As for who he thinks will win? “Therese, she’s such an iconic queen!”
