You Can Recreate Nigella Lawson’s Toasted Marshmallow and Rhubarb Cake From Masterchef at Home

Nigella

Nigella Lawson certainly has a way with words and her mesmerising — albeit holographic — appearance on MasterChef Australia 2021 showcased just that.

The very first guest to kick-off superstar week, Lawson put the contestants through their paces for their first Sunday elimination challenge.

In the first round the contestants battled it out in a classic MasterChef Australia taste test; where they had to try 18 different biscuits and in just 15 minutes they had to guess as many biscuit flavours as possible. From chocolate to Vegemite and everything in between, it was Conor, Brent, Maja, Yo Yo and Tom who found themselves at the bottom of the pack.

In the second round, the contestants had to recreate Lawson’s pièce de résistance, a Toasted Marshmallow and Rhubarb Cake — but the catch? They didn’t get to see or taste the dish and were not provided with a recipe. Instead, Nigella provided a beautifully detailed verbal description of her cake.

Now, if you were salivating just like us, and consider yourself a home MasterChef, then we’ve found the recipe straight from the kitchen of Nigella.

Lawson describes it as “splendidly celebratory, but not dauntingly difficult”.

“You need a bit of elbow grease and a blow torch, but making it feels more like play than work to me,” she added, although it sounds to us like we need a blow torch and a prayer…

You also need some patience as there are 22 steps to complete but at the end of the cook, you should have a complete cake, custard in serving jug (does store bought count?) and mega bragging rights.

Good luck!
