Olly Sholotan Recalls Being Starstruck by Saweetie: “[She Smells Like] Beauty, Rainbows, and Flowers”

POPSUGAR Studios

In our Q&A series Last Call, we get down to the bottom of every last thing with some of our favorite celebs – from the last time they were starstruck to the last song they listened to. This week, “Bel-Air” star Olly Sholotan takes our call.

“Bel-Air” still has a few more episodes left in season two, but Olly Sholotan is already looking ahead to the third installment. The beloved Peacock series was officially renewed for season three on March 17, and Sholotan is ready to go big.

“With season one, we showed that we’re breathing a new life into this historic show and giving it more dimensions and more layers. And so with season two, I feel like we got to take the foundation we built on and just expand the world,” Sholotan, who plays Carlton Banks, tells POPSUGAR. “So season three, we just hope to build on that and have bigger set pieces, go to wilder places than just Bel Air.”

While Sholotan couldn’t reveal much about season three, he assures fans “it leaves room for a lot of bigger adventures.” As for his character, Sholotan wants to continue peeling back Carlton’s layers following his redemption arc this season. “I know for a fact he ends season two in probably the most vulnerable and most raw place that we’ve seen him, and I’m excited to see how in season three we build him back up,” Sholotan reveals. “I’m excited to see how in season three he deals with more of his demons and he grows and he gets the chance to maybe one day become the lovable Carlton that we all are hoping for.”

Since “Bel-Air” first premiered in February 2022, it seems like almost every celebrity has made a cameo on the show. Michael Ealy, Marlon Wayans, Duane Martin, Daphne Maxwell Reid, and Vernee Watson-Johnson all appeared in the first season, while the second installment features Karrueche Tran and Saweetie. For season three, Sholotan certainly wasn’t kidding when he said he wants to go big. His dream guest star: Dwayne Johnson.

“I keep saying this and I don’t know how we’re going to make it happen, but I want Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to slide down. I want The Rock on our show,” Sholotan says. “And maybe it’s a cameo that he’s actually playing The Rock, or I think what would be better is if he’s Carlton’s personal trainer. I don’t know what the context is, but for whatever reason, Carlton’s into personal training and it’s Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, and he’s just whipping Carlton into shape. Look, I’ll keep pitching it. It’s all up to the producers to make my dreams come true.” Peacock, are you listening?

The season two finale of “Bel-Air” airs on April 27. Keep reading for the rest of Sholotan’s Last Call interview, which took place on his 25th birthday on April 5.

What was the last day of filming “Bel-Air” season two like?

The last day of filming was this scene between me and Akira [Akbar] that honestly, when it airs, I think it’s going to break everyone’s heart. It was so beautiful to get to work with Akira on that scene because throughout the show she’s become an actual little sister to me. And getting to film that scene with her, I think it made everyone very sad, but it was very touching.

Who’s the last “Bel-Air” costar you texted?

Funny enough, it’s Riele Downs.

What’s the last thing you did with your “Bel-Air” costars off set?

[Jabari Banks, Jordan L. Jones, and I] were at [WWE] Monday Night Raw on Monday, we went to Universal Studios yesterday, and then we’re going to a Lakers game tonight. We’re all obsessed with each other and it’s kind of an issue. I see them all way too much.

What’s the last TV show you binge-watched?

I binge-watched “Swarm” on Amazon Prime. Dominique Fishback is absolutely phenomenal.

What’s the last song you recorded?

The last song I recorded actually was with Jabari Banks. When will it be out? I have no idea. I have not the slightest clue. Because that’s the thing, me, Jabari, Coco [Jones], and Simone [Joy Jones], we’re always in the studio with each other. We’ll send each other demos; we’ll record this, then rerecord that, so it could be months, could be years.

What’s the last song you listened to?

“Around Me” by Metro Boomin feat. Don Toliver.

What’s the last thing you did for self-care?

I took a yoga class for the first time last week. It was really good. I grew up playing sports a lot and I work out a lot, so that means my mentality when I’m working out is always objective, whereas yoga is very much about flow and just meeting yourself where you are. You’re pushing, but you’re not straining yourself, and it was actually quite lovely. I think I’m going to do this more often.

It’s interesting because I realized recently I don’t really have any hobbies. Everything I do in my free time, I’m reading scripts, I’m in the studio, or I’m working on music. And I think finding hobbies is a type of self-care, right? So I’m working to find a hobby, just things that I do for the f*ck of it.

What was the last trip you went on?

Me, Jabari, and Jordan went to Vegas. It was a lot of fun. Jabari texted me and Jordan that afternoon and was like, “You guys want to go to Vegas tonight?” And we’re like, “Sure, why not?” And so we went to Vegas. It was a great time.

What’s the last piece of advice you received that changed your life?

It was in this yoga class, and it wasn’t really advice, it was more of an affirmation. It was something along the lines of, “Thank you for sharing your practice with me. May you find joy, may you find peace, and may you find contentment, Namaste.” There’s something about that I just really, really liked. I was like, “Yeah, joy, peace, and contentment. That’s kind of all I could ask for.”

But as far as advice goes, Will Smith, the iconic, Mr. Big W, he gave us advice on the first day of filming season one. He said, “Lean on each other and take every day a step at a time. Take everything one day at a time.” And that’s been so instrumental in dealing with the show and everything that comes with it.

When was the last time you were starstruck?

When I met Saweetie – there’s something about her. She is not only one of the prettiest people I’ve ever met in person, but she is also hands down the best-smelling human being on the planet. [She smells like] beauty, rainbows, and flowers. I think my brain turned off for the duration. We knew Saweetie was going to be there that day, but then she floated in to the yacht and I was like, “Wow, that’s crazy.”

What was your last birthday celebration like and how are you celebrating this year?

My last birthday I got really, really sick. I got a really bad case of strep and I don’t even know where I got strep throat from because who gets strep anymore? I went to urgent care, got my antibiotics, and then I took them and I was in bed all day.

But this year, I’m just happy to be up and about. I’m going to be going to the Lakers/Clippers game with the whole cast of “Bel-Air.” And I have a little bit of work, some studio sessions this afternoon. There’s nothing more special to me than the fact that I love what I do for work so much that it doesn’t feel like working.

What was the last gift you received?

This beautiful silver and pearl Pandora bracelet from my mom and my family for my birthday. I love fashion and jewelry. I think more men should wear jewelry, so I’m on a quest to bring back pearls for men. And my mom just somehow she knew that I needed a pearl and silver bracelet and she led the charge on getting me that present. It was very lovely.
