8 Theories About That Shocking Only Murders in the Building Finale Twist

Season one of Only Murders in the Building left viewers with the gripping cliffhanger of Bunny’s (Jayne Houdyshell) murder. The Arconia’s grumpy head of the apartment board definitely had her fair share of enemies – including the trio behind the “Only Murders in the Building” podcast. Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin), and Oliver (Martin Short) all went up against Bunny when she tried to evict them from their homes, but they aren’t the only ones who could have taken out the Arconia fixture.

The season finale finds Mabel looming over Bunny’s dead body before she, Charles, and Oliver are taken away from the building in handcuffs. Still, there’s so much more to the story that will inevitably unfold in season two. But while we wait for Disney+ to roll out the new season – which doesn’t yet have a release date – let’s discuss who may have killed Bunny.

Mabel

Considering Mabel (Selena Gomez) is the one discovered hovering over Bunny’s lifeless body, in Mabel’s apartment, with Mabel’s knitting needle stabbed through her, she’s the most obvious suspect. Plus, Bunny has never been kind to Mabel, and in the last scene where we see Bunny alive, Mabel even calls her a “cranky old b*tch.” Mabel wasn’t on the roof with the rest of the podcast team while Bunny was presumably being murdered, either, which means she could have done it. It’s also possible it wasn’t on purpose. One Reddit user pointed out, “Do we know that Mabel didn’t stab her? Bunny stumbled in and Mabel acted in self-defense?”

Charles

A slightly less likely suspect is Charles (Steve Martin), who has the same motive as Mabel. However, Charles is more of an overgrown puppy than his podcasting cohorts. However, if the first season taught us anything, it’s you never really know someone. Even the show’s co-creator, John Hoffman, told Entertainment Weekly that part of his initial show pitch teased the storyline of the main characters becoming suspects in season two. “The ending line of my pitch was ‘So at the end of the season, our investigative trio now find themselves a prime suspect in a new murder, and the subjects of a new podcast that could be coming out, done by their own mentor,'” he said.

Oliver

Truthfully. the whole “Only Murders in the Building” team could have been behind Bunny’s murder, even if it was accidental. With Oliver (Martin Short), though, he had been on the receiving end of Bunny’s distaste for quite some time. You see, he’s been financially unstable for a bit, and he owes money to the building, which Bunny oversees. She does kick him out at one point (in fact, she kicks them all out) only to reluctantly let them stay when they solve the first murder. But maybe Oliver was still mad and wanted to get rid of her?

Cinda Canning

Cinda Canning (Tina Fey) is suspiciously nearby when Bunny is murdered. It could be because she’s running a rival podcast and got a tip about the murder, or it could be because she’s involved. Cinda’s a popular suspect among the Reddit community, with one user theorising, “I’ve seen people suggest Cinda is in on this, and I would believe it. She just got bought for $30 mil. She needs a helluva investigation to do for her first project with her new bosses – so she creates one. The podcaster who gets to cover the investigation of the currently most talked about podcast hosts. Also, I just remembered that only one of Cinda’s assistants were there with her. Maybe the other one commuted [sic] Bunny’s murder or was off paying someone who did do it.”

Oscar

Oscar (Aaron Dominguez) may have just gotten out of prison, where he could have spent years plotting his revenge. He was put away for a crime he didn’t commit, which potentially resulted in a lot of anger, especially toward the building where it all happened. He may seem chummy with Mabel, but what if it’s all a ruse? Plus, Bunny’s found dead wearing a tie-dye hoodie – Oscar’s signature clothing item that becomes a marker for podcast fans. One Reddit user made a solid case, writing, “When Mabel was in the car with Tie Dye guy, she admitted to him that she fantasised about killing someone with her knitting needle. He had access and motive. He ran up the stairs during a fire alarm just to rough up Tim? I don’t buy it. I think Oscar set up Mabel.”

Ndidi

Tim Kono’s next-door neighbour Ndidi (Zainab Jah) wants to take over his apartment now that he’s dead. It made her a prime suspect in his murder, but we all know she wasn’t responsible. However, when she pleaded her case with Bunny to get Tim’s apartment, it didn’t exactly go how she wanted it to. One Redditor wisely theorised, “Tims neighbour. Bunny didn’t give her the apartment. Wouldn’t be the first person to kill for real estate.”

Sazz

Charles’s stunt double Sazz (Jane Lynch) could be a dark horse in the suspect pool. Though she only has a small part in season one, it could all be a setup for her to have a larger role in season two … like, as a murderer. One Redditor said, “I still found that moment in the episode where Oliver and Charles go to chase down Mabel and Tie Dye Guy (since they didn’t know it was Oscar yet) and Lester goes up to Charles and gives him his hat and Charles comments that he didn’t realise he lost it odd and I think it was shown for a reason. Perhaps Sazz is involved in some way and sneaking around as Charles?”

Sting

Maybe, just maybe, it was Sting who took out Bunny. Though Reddit has joked that Sting’s behind the murder, it’s not an out-of-reach idea. We could see the elusive rock star back at the Arconia in season two with sinister motives. Then again, there’s also a strong chance that Bunny’s murderer hasn’t even been introduced yet! There are new characters coming next season, including one named Nina who is gunning for Bunny’s role on the building’s board.
