Phoebe Waller-Bridge Is Dating an Oscar-Winning Director – Here’s What We Know

Phoebe Waller-Bridge has become something of a national treasure. Her work on the show “Fleabag” – which she wrote and featured in as the titular character – turned her into a household name. With its comedic genius and moments of breaking the fourth wall, the series was quickly praised for the way it dealt with complex topics like grief, and even won the Golden Globe Award for best television series and best actress for Waller-Bridge in 2020.

The TV mogul went on to write and produce the series “Killing Eve”, which was based on novels by Luke Jennings. She also served as the showrunner for season one of the TV thriller. Waller-Bridge additionally held a pivotal role in the creation of the screenplay of the James Bond movie, “No Time to Die”. Her work saw the franchise moving away from the sexist depiction of female characters it had long been known for, and instead showcased strong women, ultimately developing the whole storyline for the movie. “She gave us an interesting point-of-view for several of the characters,” Michael G. Wilson, the producer for the movie, said to BBC Radio 4. “It’s unfair to think of her as a female writer … She contributed to the whole plot of the film.”

Next, she will appear in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”, and attended the red carpet premiere for the Disney film in Cannes wearing a stunning Schiaparelli silk gown. Elsewhere in the actor’s impressive roster of upcoming work, it looks like we’ll be getting a remake of “Tomb Raider”. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Waller-Bridge will work behind the camera as both a scriptwriter and executive producer on the reboot. Unlike the previous versions, the upcoming project will not be a movie like other installments in the franchise, but rather an Amazon series.

Whilst Waller-Bridge has become known for her tell-all, self-deprecating characters, her personal life is kept a little more under wraps that her career. In fact, she told Vogue in 2019, “I’m much braver in my writing life” than her personal life.

Conor Woodman (2012 - 2017)

This may be a surprise to some fans of Waller-Bridge, but the star was actually previously married to Irish presenter and filmmaker, Conor Woodman. The pair tied the knot in 2014, and spent three years married.

After a fleeting meeting at a party, Woodman saw Waller-Bridge perform in the 2012 production of Jack Thorne’s relationship drama, “Mydidae”. She previously told the gentlewoman of their love story: “I spent most of the play naked in a bath. Conor emailed me to say, ‘I’d like to remember what you look like with your clothes on.’ I thought it was creepy … We went on a date, and since then I have basically never left his flat.” In 2017, however, the couple announced that they were filing for divorce.

Martin McDonagh (2018 - )

Waller-Bridge has been in a relationship with Martin McDonagh – a playwright – since 2018. Despite putting on a loved-up display during the Cannes Film Festival 2023 red carpet, the pair tend to keep the details of their relationship private.

In a 2018 interview with The Guardian, she refused to answer a question about her romance with the Oscar award-winner – who most recently was honored at the 2023 BAFTAs for his film “The Banshees of Inisherin”– responding: “I’m not going to talk about that, either.” The pair were first thought to be linked in 2017, when Waller-Bridge was spotted at McDonagh’s screening of his movie “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The couple were seen sharing a kiss a year later, when he won a Golden Globe for best screenplay.
