The Best Actor Academy Award Goes to Anthony Hopkins for The Father

The 93rd Academy Awards may have looked different this year thanks to the pandemic, but one thing remained the same and that was the amazing talent of the nominees.

Winning for his portrayal in The Father, was Sir Anthony Hopkins.

In the Best Actor category, history was made with Steven Yeun becoming the first-ever Asian-American to be recognised. Yeun scored a nomination for his role in the touching Minari, which tells the story of a young Korean-American family trying to find their way in rural Arkansas in the 1980s.

The late Chadwick Boseman achieved a posthumous nod for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom — which sadly ended up being his final performance. Boseman, who passed away from colon cancer in August 2020, has won the Golden Globe, SAG and Critics Choice Awards for his powerful portrayal of trumpet player Levee Green.

Also making history in the prestigious category, Riz Ahmed earned a nomination for Sound of Metal — becoming the first-ever Muslim actor to hold the distinction. The film tells the story of a heavy metal drummer who starts to lose his hearing.

While Ahmed, Boseman and Yeun are all first time nominees, Anthony Hopkins and Gary Oldman are no stranger to the awards show having been both nominees and winners in previous years.

Hopkins, nominated for The Father, won for 1991’s Silence of the Lambs, while Oldman, nominated for Mank, previously won for 2017’s Darkest Hour.
