Miley, Miley, Miley. In 2013 this former Disney starlet was inescapable for more than a few reasons. After years of juggling acting and singing — during her time on Hannah Montana she mixed both — Miley returned the focus to her music career and took it in a completely different direction. With a brand new look and sound, the 21-year-old talked up her fourth studio album and gave a hint of what fans could expect when she dropped the party song "We Can't Stop" in June, which was accompanied by a provocative music video that broke a record when it became the fastest clip to reach 100 million views across VEVO platforms. And this was all before that VMAs performance.
In August, Miley made headlines when she and Robin Thicke joined forces for the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards in a performance that saw Miley twerk up against Thicke's groin as they sang his equally controversial hit "Blurred Lines." She told Rolling Stone's October issue, "Honestly, that was our MTV version. We could have gone even further, but we didn't." Following that, Miley stripped nude for her "Wrecking Ball" music video and continued to hit music awards stages with interesting renditions of her songs — digital cat lip-syncing her lyrics, anyone? — that cemented her as one of the most-watched and talked-about stars of the year. And let's not forget how she lit up a joint onstage when she accepted an award at the recent MTV Europe Music Awards . . . On a personal note, after months of ups and downs, she and Liam Hemsworth ended their engagement in September. Not that it seems to put a dampener on Miley, who has since said she's experiencing "the best time of my life."
