Scarlett Johansson took a moment to reflect on her dating history during a candid interview on the April 18 episode of Gwyneth Paltrow‘s “Goop” podcast. Johnansson also shared some of the biggest lessons she’s learned over the course of her three marriages and dished out some kind words about her ex-husband Ryan Reynolds, whom she was married to for three years.

“We weren’t married very long, but we were when I first met you,” Johnansson told Paltrow, referring to their time filming “Iron Man 2” in 2009. Paltrow said, “We love a good Ryan Reynolds in our house,” to which Johansson replied, “He’s a good guy.”

Reynolds and Johansson first began dating in 2007 before marrying the following year. They later separated in 2010, and their divorce was finalized in 2011. Following their split, Reynolds married Blake Lively in 2012, and they now share four children. In August 2014, Johansson and French journalist Romain Dauriac welcomed their daughter, Rose, before tying the knot in October 2014. The couple were together for almost three years before splitting in 2017.

As of October 2020, Johansson is married to “Saturday Night Live” star Colin Jost, who she says has taught her the most about what she wants in a relationship. “When we first started seeing each other, I would never have probably been ready for a relationship like the one that I have with Colin [now] at different times in my life because I wasn’t comfortable setting my own boundaries,” she told Paltrow. “I didn’t know not only what I wanted but what I needed from somebody else; and I think one of the things I realized is that there are certain fundamental things in your own personality you need – for me, anyway – that I needed to share with the other person.”

The couple welcomed their first child together in August 2021, a baby boy named Cosmo. Since tying the knot with Jost, Johansson says the biggest lesson she’s learned is that she needs “to be with a compassionate person.” She said, “That’s like a fundamental characteristic that has to be there and I think that understanding what those fundamental things are that you need in a partner is a must, for longevity anyway.”

In between the ups and downs, it’s this newfound understanding of her needs that keeps her relationship with Jost strong. “That’s why it finally worked with Colin and I at that time: I was finally able to step back and actually respect myself enough to know what those things were and be OK with it,” she said, adding, “I think identifying those things was a game-changer for me.”
